starting problems

Hi everyone, i am glad to say i am now the owner of a cerb, bought it on saturday it a blue 97 4.2. the only problem is it only starts now an again, push the button once ignition comes on, press it again an nothing. mostly happens when warm. took the starter off today an had it checked but it come back ok. was told to have a switch wired in between the battery an starter, because it sounds like a wiring problem. Has anyone else done this? will there be any problems with this mod? cheers mike

sounds like the same intermittant problem i have. I have already a relay in as an activation to the starter from the 100amp fuse but wired in an LED and it doesn't recieve any voltage when you try and start even though you can hear the fuel pump prime etc.
I have swapped out the ignition box on the fuel tank and the starter solenoid relay still happens but as you say only when hot.
I am thinking it could be the alarm/imob??? sticking relay or something but why only when hot?

How much charge is the battery holding..? It could be on it's way out (especially if it's an original).

IIRC Joolz sells upgraded ones...

Mine does it occasionally. It seems to be a bad earth.
If i hold down the starter button it will usually start after a couple of minutes.

Mine used to do this - sometimes didgy starting when warm. It eventually gave up the ghost completely and it did turn out to be the starter motor. But you have said you have had that checked, so i'm not sure what your problem could be

I think you'll find that if you keep your finger on the button, the car will fire up (3 minutes is my record)

I've had a new button fitted in the dashboard, that goes to a new relay, problem sorted.

TVR Power did mine, common problem, apparently to do with a slight voltage / ampage drop.

I've still got the original button connected, so if I'm feeling sadistic, I can remind myself of what a nause that starting problem is (only happens when you're in a rush)

Its such a pain, it seems to happen at the worse moments. Had just filled up down the garage, everyone in the station looking an it dont start had to bump start it. must of looked like had just pinched it as i am only 23 but look younger in a tracky's, hoody an baseball cap bumping it out the garage.
