With the short induction kits available on the market is it a case of bolt on and go or is some retuning required?

Has anyone got a power/torque dyno read out of before and after fitting of one of the kits?

I have a whirlwind kit from Joolz waiting to go into my car. It comes with a new ECU chip with a general map which can be improved upon with a bespoke map later on.

Some kits require different back plates, so that should also be a consideration. Mine has the ACT kit, but requires their own carbon fibre backplates too so it's not the cheapest of options at £780 inc vat. It should be bolt on, but it also requires mapping to make the most of it as no generic map chip is included.

The ACT ones also seem to crown slightly higher than others I've seen and as a result 7 & 8 rub on the removable cover below the windscreen which now means they're all quite deeply scored on their upper sides after various people have fitted them in different orders through the years, despite the lengths being indicative of their positions. They don't look very nice now, so I need some new hoses.

As for advantage, I can't tell vs. whirlwind (£341 posted) and apart from price, there's probably no difference. With my own money, I'd go with Whirlwind supplied by Joolz (kitsandclassic); a great bloke, hugely knowledgeable and a pleasure to deal with. With Joolz it's all bolt on too, but you swap the EPROM chip in the ECU (Very easy to do, takes seconds).

The ACT kit is great, but so far as I'm concerned there's always a lot else on these cars that the £339 difference could go towards and even without spending £600-£700 on a bespoke mapping session you'll still get an immediate result from Joolz' kit.

I've had the ACT kit for years, and while I have the ACT back plates now the induction originally was affixed to the standard TVR back plates. I've never had a problem with 'crowning' as the pipes where trimmed when first fitted.

And yes, while the Whirlwind does/can come with a standard map, bespoke mapping will show an improvement.

Joo's remap and Whirlwind Kit frpm 326 BHP to 388 BHP, better fuel economy, runs cooler (as my chip upgrade included the Fan resets) and smoother power delivery than....

It was so long ago I can't remember if it was £600 or £800 (which included an impromptu service during which he found and fixed a thermostat problem that NO OTHER TVR dealership had spotted)

Superb Bloke. Knows more than the rest of us will ever accumulate.

The best money I've ever spent in 11 years.

Interesting reading all your experance's with the short induction kits, be good to see some more before and after dyno graphs.

326bhp seems very low, on your 388bhp run is that with the cats in still?

It's not just the power gains it's the drivability that you also gain. Light throttle through town etc. I gained around 35bhp to just under 400 plus the extra cooling

Can't wait to see what Joolz's whirlwind kit does in conjunction with the ACT performance manifold and AJP big bore exhaust system!

Interesting as my kit has also visibly been trimmed to fit and were the hoses any shorter whatsoever, they just wouldn't reach.

Maybe it's part of a different batch or style. I've also been told whirlwind won't fit on my current ACT backplates, but I'll ask Joolz to offer it up when I see him then.

As far as I remember, ACT do 2 different types of 4.5 back plates. There is the carbon fibre one with trumpets which comes with their own short induction kit. These have a smaller diameter outlet that will only work with their own induction pipes. The second type are a carbon fibre version of the standard back plate. The outlets are standard diameter and will work with the Whirlwind induction hoses or I presume standard long hoses.

AFAIK they don't sell the first type without the induction kit

I have the second type with Whirlwind hoses, and made a leap from 354 to 402bhp on Joolz's dyno, although I think most of the improvement is due to getting fuelling and ignition timing right

That explains it then!

I must have the other ACT back plates, I'll check my receipts and service history when I get back.

I got hold of a ACT set in the end, it has the trumpets with small outlets.

Tonight I started to fit it, not as easy as I thought it would be ( as always ;-) ) .
My car has a remap already fitted so hope with the new induction will still run ok.
