We were chatting about this earlier today at the local club meet - Is there any point in retaining the silver key switch? I'm either going to replace it with some form of latching switch with an integral safety cover, or just get rid of it altogether.

Any views on this?

I too will soon be replacing mine with a latching switch. (Aluminium with Blue LED halo light) it doesn't have a cover as such but when 'on' it recesses deeply and would have to be deliberately gone for.

Are you fitting yourself? I'll be leaving mine to the pros

You may decide that the 'Silver Key' can be put to better use...

Mine controls the USB SatNav power supply

No, definitely leaving everything electrical to the auto electrician.

Thats the way to do it mate!

Im having a few elec things done so this will be bulked in with them. (Interior dash lights to super bright LED versions, Warning buzzer for when lights left on and engine off, missile switches ready for fan override and some other tricks for after Anti Knock MBE installed)

Auto electrician seems to think the key serves no real purpose, so I'll install a double USB outlet instead.

I did entertain the idea of a latching switch, but am paranoid about hitting a bump and the switch unlatching and killing the engine (unlikely I know.

I'd find a different auto electrician.

I won't say it could never happen but get the correct switch... A bump and unlatch?? When pressed in and latched, the mechanism needs to be pushed IN again for it be released? I would say your supper paranoid (my looses key has only failed once after hitting a bump and my hand was finding my lights) didn't move far at all and key killed so I'm Defoe goo ing button route.

I would agree with above Auto Electrician says no purpose (it allows fuel pump to prime) if bypassed and always on then deffo no theft safety (to those amateurs) and if thottle cable snapped while open?.. No last option engine kill??

Bearing in mind I haven,t driven my car yet, and so this might be a stupid question (I am known to sk them), but couldn't you kill the engine by dropping the clutch and hitting the black button?

On the face of it such a simple decision is beginning to give me sleepless nights banghead

Red button. Yes.
This was discussed in a recent thread
http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...
the concensus being that the clutch should be left engaged in the event of a jammed WOT until a sub Mach 1.0 speed was regained.

After much toing and fringe Ive come to my best solution regarding the Silver Key conundrum.

I will be replacing with a latching button but the more I was seeing the usb replacement I decided to buy myself one of these for the cigarette lighter (which will be done away with and have a "12V" cover on it) the handy gadget is a perfectly sized dual USB which takes 2.1A (perfect for my GoPro) and the other 1.0A (Perfect for iPhone)

It also has a blue LED around it that will nicely compliment my dash and latching button LEDs.
