Just wondered how many cars have actually had engine re-maps carried out. There's loads of options now (Austec, Emerald, TVR Power chips etc which weren't available 12 months ago to release those horses and get the cars close to the TVR claimed figures.

So who's had what done and what were the results? I'll start the ball rolling.

4.5 LW Cerbie, Emerald ECU and induction mods.
Baseline 354bhp, currently 394bhp on Noble Motorsport rollers.

I had Austec do mine - I went for 'drivability' rather thany Grunt - I believe the final figure was 379 - I have yet to see the print out. But, the car runs like a 'proper car' @ low speeds now. Its back having an emergency Engine out @ the mo to sort out the Power Steering failure, so I can't tell you how the car feels across all road types.

I've had an uprated chip put in mine (£180 I think) and its made some difference, but not enough. Apparently it does better in the 4.5s.

Are the costs of the Austec option comparable with the Emerald?

One thing that would sway me is that with the emerald you get a shiny new box (plus you could take it to any competent RR in the future and, this is a long shot, I'm guessing that it could be used to run another engine as well - in case your Cerb was re-powered....)

Are those rear wheel power figures?
4.5 is meant to be 420bhp right? where is that, at wheels or crank? or in someone at TVRs imagination?

What is the true real world performance difference between a 4.2 and a 4.5, as 4.2s are so much cheaper than 4.5s it seems.

This has been discussed a couple of times (!) in the past.
4.5s make nearer 350. 420 is bull.
4.2 and 4.5 very little difference. By the best car.

It is not!!!! One of the guys at the dealership swore that it made 420, and who are we to disbelieve a tvr dealer?

who can do a remap of the standard ecu? the driveability sucks at 2 - 2.5k. i don't really need more power, yet.

The guy is talking bullsh*t. The very best cars are no where near the 400 bhp mark, never mind 420 bhp. Gary is correct.

There are loads of threads regarding this topic.

I think I'm right in saying Austec are the only ones outside of the factory that cn remap the existing ECU without having to resort to 'piggy backing' the ECU with another one.

Hi Simon,

Where did you get the chip done?

So far we have 2 Emerald cars and one Austec, anyone else?

I got mine through Andy at APM when I had the car serviced. As I say, I've heard its better in the 4.5s, but in my 4.2 with clatter cams its only made a small improvement. Essentially, the factory have taken the best maps and combined them onto one chip. A few others have these, I think Beemer is one of them.

Right, I don't think anyone has speculated on this before...... what is the maximum power advantage of a 4.5 over a 4.2, assuming non RR spec 4.5 and no modifications to heads etc - i.e. a 98 spec 4.2 with just a remap and say a 98 spec 4.5 with just a remap??? As I see it, a good remapped 4.2 should be good for about 375bhp if a good 4.5 can make say 395bhp...... am I right??? I'll be very curious to see what my 4.2 is making after some recent 'head scratching' encounters - first an Evo FQ300 on the A1... couldn't shake it off at all..... and an E46 M3 on the M1.... again, no difference....

Your car must be down on power. I have an almost 300 bhp Impreza and it cant stay with a cerb. Blasted a Golf R32 this am though (round twisties and straights).

Longbow,

Some Cerbs only make around the 300bhp mark and the weight is probably 1250-1300kg's, if you compare this to factory quotes of 350-60bhp and 1160kg's, then it's quite apparent as too why the outright real-world performance doesn't quite match the factory quoted figures. Once rolling the FQ-300 (may have been modded) will be very responsive, if you were trying to accelerate in say 4th gear at 70mph+ then that's probably why you couldn't pull away, either that or you are down on power. I ran an Audi S4 2.7 Twin Turbo before my current Cerbera and it was re-mapped to produce 335bhp and 380lbs torque and it ate my pals FQ320 for breakfast, especially once we were rolling, the torque was easily the deciding factor, does my Cerb feel faster? From a standing start most definitely, but once rolling there doesn't feel a great difference in performance, initial acceleration feels similar, but whereas the S4's power tailed off after 5750 rpm the Cerb keeps pulling. I recently had a run with a 320bhp Fiat Coupe (fwd), from a standing start I easily pulled on it, but once rolling in third gear I couldn't pull much of a gap at all, maybe if I had used 2nd it would be different? Flat out regardless of weight and power the Cerbera is a very fast car.

Harry W,

Austec may be the only company that remap the existing MBE ECU, but the other version (Emerald) offers so much more flexibility that it is definitely the most user friendly and cost effective route to take. The Emerald allows for future mods to be added with just another session on the rollers to be remapped, the Austec one doesn't, once the Austec one is mapped it's final, any future mods would mean another total cost outlay. Even if the power output claims are similar the Emerald option due to it's flexibility is the route I would take.

Gone a bit off thread, so to get back on mine has yet to be remapped, but will be soon.......

Mine is due for an Emerald re-map on Tuesday - in fact I last saw it parked behind Cliff's car (?) at Joospeed.

I'll report back - but probably only if it's good news !

Would it be worth trying to collect a set of "before and after" BHP/torque plots somewhere ?

Without doubt Joolz will do that anyway as part of the upgrade.

Indeed, but I was thinking of an open collection from anyone who cares to make their charts available, rather than just my car.
