Replacing headlight lense

After getting my car out of the garage this morning, walking back to it I noticed a dirty great hole in the headlight lense, A little curious as the glass that had fallen out was sat on the curved shelfy bit (IYKNWIM). I assume it must been have been a stone on the drive back from the RR day

I have original headlights (97 car), and as the search function is currently disabled I'm unable to look back at previous threads (easily). I know one obvious option is to use the opportunity to upgrade the lights ( could also trigger a divorce though). Is the 'simple' option of changing the lens actually simple or will I end up with severe injuries like nervous?

Any experiences or suggestions greatly received

hey johnny,

when i was in my hole yesterday (both physically and mentally) i took a good long look at how the h/light lense is attached and youll be pleased to know that its only a few butterfly nuts (not the nuts of butterflies, nuts shaped like butterflies) holding it in place, and actually they look easy to get to. No, really, they do.

Unlike the indicators which was like performing brain surgery through a letterbox.

Youll be fine, promise.

That said, im seriously considering the pod option (to make me happy and the wife less unhappy than the collosal ker-ching of the smooooth look), maybe if we both go this route we could haggle a discount with whoever supplies... lemme know your thoughts.


know what you mean bout the search function. though you dont know true dependance till you find yourself searching for threads on things that youre car doesnt even possess. sad, but true...

must be a weekend for headlights ... one of my pods was falling out when i washed it to come down to surrey RR ... mastic'd it back in this morning ...

Nervous - thanks for your guidance. So can I presume this is not a sealed unit and that the lense is seperate.

So once I've located these butterflies nuts, does the whole pod come out forwards or does the pod stay in situ and the light & lense come out backwards through the access panel?

David Smith - it was a pleasure to meet you on Saturday also although I still find myself getting confused between your real name and your PH name, but I'm sure I'll get there one day!

Also, can anybody suggest the best place to get such a lense quickly?

im guessing the whole thing comes forward. BUT it may well be the case that the rear lense assembly seperates and comes backward, leaving the front in situ. id call my local indy and be sure, cos lets be honest, i know nuthin'
