Duff shock ?

On a recent trip to ATS for a rear wheel puncture repair, I noticed whilst the car was jacked up, there seemed to be a dark coloured liquid leaking from the shock & it seemed to be fizzing on the floor.

It could have been rain water, but I did'nt think so.

I'm a tad ignorant on car mechanics, so please excuse the question, is there any liquid inside the shocks ?

And how can I tell if it's shot ?

The car's always felt somewhat nervous at the back, and doesn't seen any worse (if it's possible to feel worse)
