Got in the car this morning.....Guess what, no Fg gears.

Pedal feels normal, did slave last summer, and master just before xmas, so it's probably the fingers

WTF is it with these clutches lately?

It's now on stands in the garage, so I'll let you know what the fault is in a few hours....

Oh well......

They know summer is coming so they are getting all the problems out the way so you can have fun when the sun is out full time.

That's my optomistic outlook on it... (don't know if I'll say the same if I get home and find mine the same way.)

I'm getting paranoid now. If it is just the fingers, maybe AP will just sell you the diaphram spring, now that ther Cerbera is no longer a production model......

Why do these fail so frequently? What sort of mileage are people getting out of their clutches? Mines done 25-35k (can't be more accurate than that as the last owner fitted it himself, so I don't know exactly how many miles it had racked up by then).

Getting a clutch to last 100k plus miles is not an outrageous demand - is it?

I wonder if it a combination of heat and a too longer throw by the slave cylinder? If the fingers get brittle through the heat and the slave having too longer throw it could explane things. I wonder how much it would cost to get a number of these produced, just a thought.

OK, an update on my afternoon of ups & downs!!!

Before taking it all to bits, a quick check of the resevoir revealed that it was half empty ( definitely not half full), a look in the footwell, no fluid there, so maybe the slave seals have gone again thinks me.....

I stupidly didn't fit the higher quality ones that Joolz supplies when I did the job last year....stupid boy

So a couple of hours later, I pull the gearbox away from the bell-housing to be greeted by a trickle of DOT 5.1...great I've found the fault thinks me...happy boy

15 mins further and the clutch is on my garage floor, with me counting the busted fingers....6, yes 6 in all.....Sad boy.

How the hell did it ever get in gear??? With 6 fingers missing, and a leaky slave, it's done well to last this long. It's been fine recently, a bit of judder, the other day, should of known then really.

As for the condition of the cluch, the plates are nearly down to the rivets, so will be replacing the whole thing.

How do I tell if it's an early or later clutch??? Car is '97, so could be either.

Will post some pics later, after I've had a shower, and taken the dog for a walk.....To be continued

P.S TVR-Fan.....can I borrow your alignment tool

There's definitely something wrong, as you say...either metal spec or a stroke (oo-er) length problem....I'll be phoning AP on Tuesday, then about 5 minutes later I'll be phoneing Joolz, after being told to sod off by AP.....Got to try though.

Good on you! I don't see why AP shouldn't sell direct now the car is no longer produced by TVR. Their web site does mention things like 'maximum travel 8mm' for their pressure plates, so perhaps a combination of heat and over extenstion is doing it. Don't the cats (very hot..) sit about under the bell housing?

Of course you can borrow my alignment tool, e-mail me your address and il post it to you. Be interesting to see how you get on with it.

You should get it before you get your clutch delivered.

Check the plates if they have springs you are ok but no springs means a new shorter slave cylinder.

Both the down-pipes run down past the bellhousing within an inch or so with no heatshield in between so i imagine it will get very hot especially when sitting in traffic jams.

Not worried about a couple of quid for the postage, its a drop in the ocean compared to clutches and gearboxes oh and engine rebuilds..... so dont worry about it.

had a look and the rear mount has totally disintegrated, will remove the diff tomorrow and wait for the mount to be delivered.... looks like another week off the road. Not a very good ratio so far, one week off two days on hehe.

Right, eventually found the cable to connect the camera to the laptop, so....

Question 1. How the F**K did this clutch work at all, did a re-count, seems that 7 fingers are snapped.

Question 2. Is it a early or late clutch? and are they easy to distinguish?

You was lucky to get any gears at all, i think the juddering you experianced was due to the pressure plate releasing the clutch plates uneven with only half the fingers still intact, you will prob notice most of them are broken all in the same area.

The difference as i mentioned before is in the clutch plates..... see if you have springs on them or not.

Sorry Kev, missed your earlier post about the plate springs,:mustlearnnottospeedreadsmiley:

You're right, they all fractured in exactly the same place....I'll be pulling it apart later, so will put another pic on.

Cheers....
