Many months ago there was a poster called Nemesis who used to work for TVR.

He could have answered your question instantly.

In fact he was an invaluable source of information.

Sadly there were several PH Trolls who made him reconsider his contributions to PH.

So he decided to delete both his presence and his contributions, perhaps an over reaction, but entirely understandable.

We are all the poorer for that loss.

You could consider this a highly political post if you read between the lines, so this might end up being consigned to the NPE forum, we shall see.

It's likely to be casting company or department, engine size and numbers produced.

You can get a lot from the VIN I believe

Position Typical Example Explanation
1 S Northern Europe
2 D Great Britain
3 L (with1&2) TVR Engineering
4 C Cerbera Body Variant
5 A First Variant
6 1 AJP engine Engine variant

???? - SP6 Cerbera non CAT

P - Fuel type: P - Petrol

01 - not used for any purpose

1993 - sequential build for that year starting at 1000

and some more good reading here

The table above comes from cerbera.co.uk but I had to WayBackWhenMachine it as the page is now off-line

HTH (I know it doesn't answer the question about the engine number but should give you more information to your car, which I guess is what you are after smile )

Sorry, hands up. I was that Troll.

I apologise for my lack of patience depriving y'all of such a fabulous source of information. bow

He started Automedon after TVR closed. Here is a glowing reference to their work.
Unfortunately the company has been dissolved.

Oh, and his name was nemasis but, if you/we are very lucky, he may still be around under the name 1485

Thanks for the VIN number info. I get the impression the engine numbering system is going to stay a mystery.

ok here you go, 00 = year(2000) 12 = week number(in that year) P = production engine 450 = engine cc(in this case 4.5litre) 1468 = engine number . simple really when you know!!!! so the other engine is an earlier one 8 = (1998) 51= week P=production 450 =4.5 litre 1084 is engine number.hope this solves the mystery and this is the same for ALL TVR engines that were made in house.

Would anyone like a crack at decoding mine, it's 624P4200148. It's from a 96 4.2 and I assume it's a pretty early one.

P= Production not petrol ,as in it was a production line engine.
