Dear ECU experts,

I am trying to restart my 4.5 motor after replacing the ignition components and am having problems. The engine coughs, splutters and spits back through the throttle chokes. I have flattened the battery once because of the kickbacks but have got it to run smoothly once too.

I had a thought that the Adaptives might need resetting now that the ignition components are changed but don’t know if you can reset them without the motor running.

Is this possible or does the motor have to be running to reset them.
(Battery currently recharging)

Ta !

Yes.

The whole fuel map is three dimensional.

There is a common, unchanging base map burned onto the EEPROM, that is shared by both banks.

And two adaptive maps, one per bank.

So in your case Paul for a v8. An odd 1357, near side, Adaptive map and an even 2468, off side, Adaptive map.

The maps themselves are two dimensional, with throttle position and rpm on each axis.

The ecu selects the injector duration from the current position of the throttle and current rpm.

The injector duration is the sum of the corresponding values in (at least) the base map and adaptive map.

There are potentially also barometric pressure, air temperature and water temperature maps that contribute to the injector durations as well. (Or at least a hard coded heuristic for each somewhere)

Resetting the adaptive maps when the car isn't running is ok.

They relearn when the engine is running.

However, coughing, spitting and backfiring through the throttle bodies could also be you've the firing order wrong?

This is what I was thinking.. Have you checked the lead order is correct?

Gents, I am so glad that you brought this up.
When I took the ‘snakepit’ apart I took care to write down the layout.
I also downloaded a diagram, which some kind PH’er had put up.

I was shocked to see how different my setup was
BUT
I have long been confused about the ‘wasted spark’ design of the firing plan on the AJP.
So now I ask you, does my current wiring layout (That in red) is correct or should I revert to the original (in black) ?

Thanks for any time you can spare on this Numpty. bow

Ooops ! Just realised this diagram wa for a 4.2.
Mine's a 4.5 - does this matter ?

Get it wired up as per the diagram. 4.2 and 4.5 are the same.

Gentlemen,

The Firmament will be smiling a little more brightly tonight with your combined brilliance and the fact that one of its little stars will be out on the road again.
I truly thank you from the bottom of this old heart of mine (cue Rod) for your combined help during this harrowing time.
