increasing dif/gearbox whine
Discussion
On inital start after about 2-3 mins of idling warming up and then pulling away there is an increased dif/gearbox whine. The car has always had a small amount of dif whine but of late it has increased. Once the car has been run for a good 10-15 minutes the low speed whine is lessened but it still percists.
Any easy checks so try and work out what is is or does it really need a ride in with an expert and up on the ramps. May or maynot be connected but reverse has also become harder to get into gear!

Well, driving home from work on Friday with the weekend ahead of me to check out the fluids and try and work out what the whine was.....bang. Lost every gear apart from 4th, the gear I was in at the time.
Was forced to pull away slowly going up hill with just 4th so I think the clutch is cooked as well!
Fingers crossed the AA warranty covers it and I get her back soon!
I was only going to post today about how it was my first clutch and everything was A ok....... that will teach me!
One thing I did notice when trying to push and manouvre the car without the engine running...my god the steering is sooo heavy.
Will keep you updated. Moral of the story, any excessive whining from the gearbox area, get it looked at asap.

Sorry to hear about the g/box.
Agree with maneuvrability minus power steering, esp. up a gradient, but..why not kick it into neutral and run the engine to give you PAS?
in terms or getting it started again a good point, it stalled while trying to pull uphill in 4th and with the traffic backing up behind me and a handbrake that only holds the car on the flat! I just jumped out with my passenger and pushed it up the hill! Had about 4 school kids helping as well, very helpful indeed.
thankfully it broke down right next to a pub so sat in there waiting for the recovery truck. Useful in terms of having somehwere warm with a drink to wait but had to endure the local knowall sat at the end of the bar describing how he bet he know what had happened and if it was him........ blah blah blah blah blah.
