I am about to do this shortly for the first time on my 4.2 for painting. I did it without any issues on my SP6 and I have bought new O rings for when I put it back on. But can someone remind me if the fuel rail comes away from the injectors or do the injectors come out along with the fuel rail.

Likely to be half and half.

Mine came out with all injectors attached.

My rail always comes out with injectors, but just being careful as they catch on the injector hole, being kind of spring like in the rail.

Is it necessary for the injectors to go back into the same hole they came out of, should I label them up or does it not matter?.

It doesn't matter ...but why not get them tested and ultrasonically cleaned while they're out? Then you'll know whether they are actually flowing identically and have good spray patterns.

The injectors are all the same so the order of the replacement doesn't matter (however, of course the order of the connector leads does so take some photos of those and ensure they are labelled!)

While mine were out I had them cleaned and flow tested - not massively expensive and proved that all 8 were good

I know that Paul (ukkid35) had his flow tested and one was duff so it might be good to do anyway - for me the cleaning improvements were minimal (< a few %) but peace of mind was good too

Aide also had his done with a different company from me and was very happy with the result

Check the O Rings carefully as they 4.x size (can't remember off the top of my head) is a hard one to buy - there's some threads from me on PH about replacing my starter motor where I had to do the same

As for injectors coming out of the rail versus the engine, I think it depends on who tight each end is and whether they were recently removed.

For me, as the guys above, the injectors stayed in the fuel rail.

BTW there's a good trick to start the car with the fuel pump fuse removed to burn off as much excess fuel as you can before you do this.

Get ready to kill the battery power though, as when I did this, the ECU decided to keep cranking the car continually as it wasn't firing so I had to very quickly with a spanner disconnect the negative before it did any trouble with my new starter!

Thanks guys,

Getting them cleaned is a good idea, I will do that.

I will let you know how I get on.

My injectors came out attached to the fuel rail while I was changing the alternator. I just cracked the fuel hose nut and caught the fuel in a little beaker. I did manage to nick a couple of O rings while I was re-inserting so it's best to have a few spare.

As mine was off, I painted mine lime green smile

Byff, what type of paint did you use as I was going to paint mine when I take it off.

No idea, it was done by a local spray shop so I'd imagine it's just normal car paint. Focus RS Lime green, it looks lovely hehe

Thanks, I wasn't sure if you had used a heat resistant paint as I wasn't sure how normal paint would cope with the temperature under the bonnet. The paint on the fuel rail and air intakes has flaked off and looks a right mess.

I'm just in the process of doing mine also.
Actually was supposed to be just the cam covers I was doing as part of the 12k service. However, as with these things I'll probably do the inlets and rail before I build it up.

I've also had the injectors cleaned - same place as everyone else.

The paint I used was the VHT etch primer followed by VHT black crinkle finish. Will see how it endures the heat and if it lives up to the high temperature claim. I saw it on Frosts website and then hunted it down on Amazon or The bay.

I used one of those paint stripping cleaning discs on a mandrel - was from Frost if I recall. Took most of the old paint away. The inlets I'll probably just degrease and key, as the paint is generally quite sound, just faded.

Cheers,
Brian
