Air Con Compressor
Discussion
Hi, apparently there is a problem with the switch at the top of my air con compressor. The rest of the system is sound and once the clutch is bypassed then it works fine. I am reluctant to get a new compressor £300 +VAT for the sake of a switch. Has anyone else had this problem? I am told that the compressor is made by Sanden, so I have left a message with one of their distributors.

Switch at the top of the compressor? Interesting. There's a pressure switch screwed in to the top of the filter/drier in the front n/s wing. which isn't that expensive. How are they 'bypassing the clutch'? If they're just providing 12V to the switch wire connected to the compressor they're not bypassing the clutch, just the rest of the system which is preventing engagement of the clutch. This may be because there is either an electrical fault preventing the 'air con on' signal making it to the compressor when the button is pressed on the control panel, or the trinary switch on the filter/drier has detected high/low pressure and is preventing the compressor engaging.
The extent of my ignorance never ceases to amaze me. I know nothing..............
But after taking advice from various sources - an aircon expert who knows systems and has worked on the car, an auto electrician who has worked on the electrics (and repaired a shorted circuit in the heater control box ?from condensation), and ACR Ltd who sell and refurbish compressors, the collective opinion is that there is another pressure switch in the system, and the easiest fix would be to bypass the switch on the compressor. So unless anyone has strong feelings........
Repair will have to wait........ first comes the Cerbfest, should be spectacular! Aircon will be windows down all the way.......with free sound system......

Mines a V8, but I believe the a/c components are the same. The real purpose of the thermistor is to prevent the evaporator freezing solid and preventing any air passing through it. It's adjustable so you can set the temp by running the ac system and sticking a thermometer in one of the events and adjusting the thermistor.

Byker, I assume you're aware of the thermistor usually located under the dash near the steering wheel/dash ECU which can be used to alter the temperature of the air con?
Yeah. very cold in cold weather, cold in warm weather, luke warm in hot weather. I put it down to the condensor not being able to shift the heat when next to a very hot source on a hot (30 degrees) day.Byker28i said:

Tested mine out and on a 25deg day I was getting 5 dog out of the vents. You may need a top up, ATS did mine for £29.95 the system takes 750g of 134a.

My aircon finally fixed after wire to compressor found to be corroded, despite showing 12volts? Some nice cold air at last.
