Hi all - newbie here, have been a lurker for years, but just officially joined the club with a new a new (to me) Cerb, and am chuffed to bits with it.
After reading all the descriptions about what an occasion it is to drive one, I thought I might be disappointed, but you all know how it goes :-)

Looking carefully at my chassis, I am wondering how much I should worry about the obvious rust spots.
I know that often the outriggers can look great underneath but rotten on top (where the body hides the rails and water can reside).

I apologize if what i'm asking amounts to 'how long is a piece of string', just hoping that some of you are much more experienced at viewing these and might be able to point me in the right direction.

thanks in advance, and sorry for the multiple posts!

I thought mine was solid until I got the body off, especially as I had the advantage of a '96 chassis that had the supposedly better silver powder coat on it. Theres no way to tell about the front outrigger corners unless you either lift the body or get a small inspection camera in there.

Rear outrigger corners don't look like anything to worry about yet though.

Congrats on your new car. You will love it.

You are right to be cautious about outriggers.

It is very difficult to tell from photos, but nothing in the photos you posted caused me any alarm.

While you are right in that they can rust through from the top, normally when they reach that stage they have some surface rust on the bottom as well.

I exercise a bit of caution because photos can be misleading, but if I had bought it and it looks like those photos I would be relaxed about it.

People here are being admirably cautious about the chassis condition

But to me it just looks like you are lording it over the rest of us - it looks perfect to me

But I'm not so sure about those Bridgestones

I didn't think the Potenza S-02 been made for quite some time

However, they still seem to be on sale via MyTyres etc so I'm probably wrong

~~~~~~~~
Also worth bearing in mind that the purchase price of an average Cerb is now so much higher than a few years ago that the cost of an outrigger job is now much less of a consideration
Well, I see the community is just as awesome as the car itself (well almost, the grin factor from the Cerb can't really be matched).
Sorry chaps, I should have mentioned that it was a 2001 and at the time of the photo, was sitting on temporary wheels/tyres, while the originals were refurbished (anorak award goes to ukkid35, well spotted!).
I should have also mentioned that the rest of the chassis is very good, these were the 4 questionable areas.
'pmessling', afraid I don't have a facebook account :-( but thanks for the offer, can you message me somehow via the forum?
Perhaps I should sand-off whatever surface rust there is, and go over with POR15?
I'm a huge believer in POR15, I regularly coat exposed areas
You'd be forgiven for thinking this was a five year old child's school project
Sadly not this is all my own work
Thanks for this, presumably it can also be applied clear?
(That way, it won't stand out from the rest of the chassis)
Presumably, you just touch it up every few years if it gets chipped?
You can get POR15 clear.
My wishbones are covered in the black version of it. After much persuasion (hammering) to go back in to place in my fresh chassis, they still look fine. I've not used a piddly sissy hammer either.
I did get them blasted, but I also painted the rear uprights, which didn't get blasted. They had just a good clean. These have been subjected to a regime of dropping on concrete, dropping on asphalt, falling off of my jack (Occasionally being cushioned by a badly placed human foot...) and they look fine.
Clean it with the proper stuff, minimum of two coats and it seems only a sand blaster will remove the stuff.
If you get it on your skin, you'll wear it until it grows out. It's very runny so it makes a big mess, and sets quickly. Decant the remainder in to some labelled (Wilko) glass jars with metal lids because you will never remove the tin lid again if you decide to put it back on.
Your chassis looks great from those pictures, so sleep easy.
It's available in a few different colours and finishes
Here you can see that I'd previously used some Grey POR15
The thing is, I can't see the chassis when I'm driving
Not particularly quick, and I messed up a few lines too, but whatever
