Values and futre values
Discussion
Having recently bought a 4.5 and spent a while looking at different cars a couple of things occured to me. 1 is that there aren't that many 4.5's about any more (not many decent 4.2's either). 2 the values have held quite strong since I had my first cerb 3 years ago. What really started me thinking was that i found an old autotrader from about two or three years ago and the car prices were more or less what we are paying for the same cars now. suppose it's good news in some ways unless your looking for a car. Mind there are some bloody nails though.

imho it depends what mileage you put on, if you do low mileage (say 6k a year) then you are right, although you will take a hit if you bought from a dealer i.e. a car you bought from them for 24k, they would have bought for, say, 18-19K, add 15k miles, they'll sell that for 22k, they'll want to buy it for 16-17 top.
Also, any decent dealer is going to give the car a full service and nose cone re-spray etc, so they have to build that into the price.
If you are to sell privately, you will get more money, though quite a bit less than the dealer selling price (at least 3k) - and unless you are trying to pull a fast one you will get it sorted just before selling, so that could easily be a grand or so, plus any decent buyer is going to have your car fully checked out and something is bound to crop up which will mean you negotiate.... sorry but it's a buyers market out there - if you don't believe me look at the for sale ads.....
So to summarize, it is posible to get deals privately these days, but if you buy from a dealer, expect to pay top dollar. If you buy well, and do low mileage, get no stone chips (drive like a wuss) then you will see low depreciation. If on the other hand you use it daily, all weathers, rack up the miles, expect to lose a few grand.
Though frankly, if depreciation is your main issue, buy a 911 !

i started a thread similar to this the other week.
i was interested in possible long term ownership
prices. by long term i mean 10- 15 yrs. i paid
26k for my 4.2 from dm. two yrs ago. top money
but i have to say its a top car. but ive probably
lost 7 to 8k already. but do you think the cerb
could become desirable in years to come and have
the prices bottomed out?
