Had some strange problems with carbon Lorraine brake pads. I'm finding them a fairly poor fit to the car.

Lots of squealing, and the fact that on examination they are so close to the hub they are actually occasionally leaving marks on the hub bolts despite the fact they are flush with the outside of the disc.

I have had to file a little of the pad metal backon the inside and now am progressively moving a little of the pad material out the way of the central hub.
I have had the pad off the car about twenty times over the last year due to trying to get them sorted. Also noticed the front discs (non drilled) starting to discolour they are getting so hot.

Today I took them off for the last time and saw that the edges of the pads are starting to crack. So I think I'm done with high performance pads for a while

Mine is a 2000 model so I have the older single bolt holding fronts.

We haven't had a brake pad discussion for some time on the forum so I wondered what everyone else is using at the moment and where to go for the best prices. I'm thinking of the original ferodo, as I had those for years without a moments problem despite the odd track day but could be persuaded by anyone with a good recommendation. Shame as the CL pads I'm taking off are pretty much full thickness.

I'm starting to think this

Wouldn't touch EBC with someone else's too much bad feedback about..

Had Mintex 1155's on mine previously.. Which were decent, although a little noisy about town.

Just about to fit some Carbotech AX6 pads to try, a mate raves about their more track biased XP8's, recommended to him by Mat Smith I believe.. Ian @ Carbotech was very helpful and responsive when dealing with him.

Have you spoken to Paul/Brummmie about your issues?

I use YellowStuff all round on two cars, they are a perfect compromise of price/performance, as you can get a full set for the Cerb for about £100

Jhonno is right that there was some bad feedback on Yellowstuff about ten years ago, but they have completely reformulated the pad material since then

Most importantly for me their cold performance isn't compromised despite being track day focused

If you try a set and don't like them, you haven't lost much, and you might even find someone who'll take them off your hands

I was at the Ring in my 928 a few days ago and they were great, despite being a dry day, and the car being somewhat heavier than the Cerb

Haven't spoke to Brummie as the pads have been in the car a couple of years hehe Would be grossly unfair to do that.

Other people rave about CL pads so my cars probably weird.

I've ordered some anti squeal rubber pads cos this next set of pads isn't going to squeal!!

Meanwhile Where you get the yellowstuff from for £100. That seems cheap for the prices I've been looking at?

Just watched a video of a chap who can't get rid of a squeal using Carbotech AX6. Might be setup, might be pads. Either way I'm after quiet pads.

If it’s mainly a road car i would stay away from redstuff. I made that mistake and suffered from poor cold performance.

Yellow stuff I found perfect for road and track, currently have yellowstuff on the cerb and road car for many years and find excellent cold an hot performance and good price.

Yellow stuff it is. The link above doesn't show if the pads fit a 4.5. I assume they're the same, but slightly unhelpfully they don't show a diagram to check. I'll call them on Monday.

Hopefully between that and the backing pads I'll have a nice quiet car back again.

BTW I took the inner brake pad stops out and cleaned them. Also had adjusted them to give a little more clearance for the central hub. I noticed each had a fine film of rubber underneath, looked like silicone sealant. Anyone know on rebuild of these whether the brake pad is meant to sit on the metal slide runner, and then between the metal slide and the casting there should be sealant?

Not seen it before on other types of calliper, however not seen callipers before where so much of the disc area is utilised by the pad either.

I used to run minted 1144's. I've probably still got a set for the rears somewhere.
No issues running on the road, but I got real bad brake fade and overheating on track days at castle Combe and I found they'd warped my disks.

Because of that I moved to CL pads front and rear and don't have any issues with them.

Mintex 1144’s are too hard for normal road use ,couldn’t stop them squealing on my car and warped my front discs. EBC redstuff for me....

Another vote here for yellowstuff. Use them on my daily as well as the Cerb.

Good bite from cold, in the cold, but also won't go to pieces on track. And very reasonably priced. I bought a full set from here for around £120 posted:

Okay CL are off yellowstuff are on.

Plus points,
1) Yellowstuff come with rubber backing pads as standard so the extras I ordered weren't needed
2) All the squeals and grinding noises are gone, and its easy to see why.

There is an important different in the pads that the yellowstuff metal backing and pad have more clearance at the centre to avoid the spinning hub. If you place the pads back to back you can see where the CL pads were rubbing in the centre and I tried to remove some material. The Yellowstuff have a good 1-2mm cut out to avoid the hub. I think if I had continued to file away at the CL pad I would have eventually got there. The pads are otherwise identical in fit.

Given that I seem to be the only one with CL pad issues I suspect this isn't much use to anyone. I'll leave it there unless anyone else has CL issues at which point I can post photos and tell you where, and how much filing on a CL pad you need to turn it into a Yellowstuff pad fit.

A bit late to this thread I know but Pagid RS29's are my favorite, Tried EBC but found they started to break up after a few track days.

The Pagid pads are low dust, don't squeal, don't fade and last me a good couple of years of heavy track use, about £500 for front and back and they really really stop you both when hot and from cold.
