Had enough!

I have had a rattle in the Cerb's bonnet for a couple of weeks. I've checked everything:

No fluid leaks
No oil in the V
All levels normal
Power steering fine
No aircon
Bearing changed in gearbox by Andy at APM when slave cylinder sorted
Car runs fine, 75 to 80 C and 55 oil pressure

Last night I changed the alternator, which had seen better days and ..............................the bl**dy noise was still there.


Feint until 2800 rpm, from there to 3400 rpm louder, onwrads gets drwoned by engine noise.

Sounds baringy, or loose bolt rattling around.

Any other ideas, other tahn keep the revs over 3400!

Check the little bump stop for the exhaust rear of the cats. This can work loose and cause a noise that sounds like its coming from the engine bay.

Its in the centre of the car rear of the cats and rubs on the plate that connects the two exhausts. This is just before the pipes turn outwards.

Just a thought as I had this in mine.

That's exactly what my rattle was, the rubber bobbin had sheared making a rattle at about 2-2800rpm. Replaced it but it's snapped again with 10 miles! Looking for a better solution if anyone has any thoughts?

It is off at the moment but it allows the exhaust to move around too much causing the 2 back boxes to knock on bodywork and chassis so not really a cure just a different noise but definetley less annoying.
There's obviously an alignment problem with my exhaust beacuse it's sitting well to the right of the locating holes for the bobbin but it looks like I'm stuck with that.
Maybe a solid mounting will have to do until I can find a rubber mounting that will last more than a few miles.

I'll have a look tonight, got to say it sounds a likely candidate, there basically isn't anything else in the engine bay to check. Thanks Jonny

I had a similar sound, Again the exhaust mounting brackets. Ended up getting a customised bracket fabricated that removes the reqruiement for a rubber bit. No problems now.

Unfortunately there is a giant amount left in the engine bay to check

I've gone after a number of rattles, most turn out to be the fact that TVR doesn't secure any pipe in the entire engine bay.

I'm afraid its usually a two person job to isolate the noise, and then it turns out to be something so simple you end up kicking yourself for replacing kit.

Extra, David, Julian et al,

It was that funny rubber thingy that supports the twin pipes, however Julian is right so than ks all round,..... as with Cerbs there is a however....I have now found that one of the cats is rattling whilst running the engine with my lugs underneath !

I'm happy that it isn't the engine and it is something less expensive, that is if I take the environmentally unfriendly solution to the exhaust!?

Get a set of DynoCats put on, you help earth a little and you get a beefy sound but the raspiness is smoothed out into a whistle....

You'll have to get someone to weld them up to the face plates cut off your existing cats. Any PowerFlow garage can do it for probably £30 odd quid.

Might just be better off getting a new cat at whatever stupid price to get you through an mot and then banging a hole through your current damage cat to turn it into a decat.

Somehow dont think that MOT will be a problem here, apparently the guy who does it is a really top bloke
