Yes, so we all like more power, but I am in two minds over this. Firstly if you extract these impressive gains aren't you putting a bigger strain on everything mechanical? Thus leading to earlier mechanical failiure and higher running costs.
Secondly isn't a rolling road session a cruel and brutal thing to do to a car? The lack of slipstream cooling must murder the engine bay with those hot exhausts in there.

Mechanical loads are a by product of increased rpm's so if you can get gains in torque and bhp within the stock rpm's you should be ok. All you'r doing is making the engine more efficient. It either makes more power/torque when you hit the gas or if you drive carefully should make more mpg.
As for the dyno stuff, I know it's horrible to witness but an engine should be able to do this stuff all week long not just on an RR. A lot of production cars set endurance/speed records over a 7 day period, Saab for one
They do need cool air though, very important.

Glassfibre is very good heat insulator, add that to excessive rolling road use with limited air flow from what? 5000cfm odd?
Heat damages engines.
Metal rubbing on metal damages engines.
Greater stress on components that are already in their old age, leads to serious fatigue and potential grain damage in billet and forged materials. Cast materials will fracture like there was no yesterday.
But boosted is giving sound advice. But the advice only applies to well engineered stock engines that are using materials that are a lot stronger than what is being thrown at them. LS7 anyone?

It seems to me that many of the reliability issues are associated with the valve gear, which doesn't care how much power you're making. Putting a car on the rollers is certainly going to be more stressfull than normal driving, but cars do routinely go on the rollers without problems (mine has been on numerous times, for example). I suspect that engines which suffer mechnical failure on the rollers were probably distressed to start with and may well have been heading for trouble anyway,the stress of the rolling road session just brought it forward.
For example, shpubs Cerbie threw a bearing on the rolling road recently but a strip down revealed widespread wear, given the high milesage (100K ish) this is no great surprise.

I was thinking if a re-map, mainly to cure low speed running faults, but new throttle pots have made that a lot better (plus new leads, new linkage parts etc.
) As my car has such high milage and is still fast enough for me, I'll save the pennies for the inevitable rebuild

Yeah, its always at the back of my mind. I'll keep going until my nerve gives out.
Trouble is, no one knows how long they'll go for, the engine could do another 50k miles. Or it could go pop tonight (I hope not).
When it was serviced at APM a few weeks ago, Andy said the cams looked fine, so thats a good sign.
My hope is when it does go, it'll just start using a lot of oil or something like that.
I the meantime I'll keep using it, trip to Le Mans and a few more trackdays.

The trouble is with all this power increase, is that the only place you can really use it is on a track or on a nicely surfaced bit or A road or motorway. I was driving it down a bumpy B road last night and anything other than nippy would have resulted in wacking the bottom on the road and even more steering wheel shocks.

Ah, another country dwelling Cerbera owner? I agree, even on the track I don't often need to rev the car past 6000rpm in order to go faster than I should
On the road 4-5000rpm seems to make most things disapear in the mirror.

yes increased power = increased loads on everything related to it.
engines usually break because of revs, usually a rod or bolts breaking on the exhaust stroke.
if you're worried about your enigne i any way don't have anything done to it, that's really the bottom line.

If heating was really a problem, it would be very easy to massively increase the amount of cooling by putting a fine water spray behind the fan? I was surprised how feeble the cooling fan was that Austec used on their open day last year, is this normal? I was expecting a massive fan putting out a 30 mph blast, but it only seemed to be wafting air in the general direction of the car.
