Trying to help a fellow cerbie owner who's overseas.

If your only laptop runs windows 10, what's the best way of getting an older windows version running within that? Something like an XP emulation would be great .. any tips I can pass on from people who've managed it ?

cheers

Installing Windows XP software using compatibility mode is the first method to try

If compatibility mode doesn't do the job see below

Emulation is not what your customer needs, Virtualisation is the method to use

A Virtual Machine (VM) will do the job

I have used Oracle Virtualbox and it works perfectly for Windows 7

Having moved to Debian Linux from Windows (I don't like Windows), I installed Virtualbox and ran Windows 7 within it, the same can be done with XP

See here https://www.virtualbox.org/

The other thing I have done is purchase 4 x XP Laptops with genuine License Numbers on them, all Laptops being of the same model, this ensures I never come unstuck should I need XP in the future

I suppose you could suggest your customer searches ebay for an XP Laptop

If it's for connecting to the ECU, I believe there is an app that can be used on a smartphone. You'd need a serial to USB converter lead on top of the 9 pin connection.

I've never got the original diagnostics running under windows 10 , so you're 3 options.

Buy an old laptop that runs windows XP. The good news is they are very cheap and have serial ports
RS-AJP software for an android device. Works really well but no graphing
Or the software from EvoOlli - MBETool - runs under windows 10

Thanks for the replies everyone, plenty there for him to get his teeth in to.
He has some IT techie friends who can help him, otherwise using an older laptop might be a good way forward. I use old thinkpads and they always behave well.
Customer is literally the other side of the world so not exactly easy to pop over and help him out

Just to add to the fun I run Virtualbox on my Mac and have a Windows XP image that runs everything great

Here's a screen shot smile

You then just share the USB ports between the two with Devices -> USB and tick the one you want - I have a number of cheapy USB -> RS232 leads that work just great with the MBE ECU

Good though the other applications are I only really want the customer to run the original tvr diags if at all possible, it's the best for diagnostics work really, and seeing as he's in New Zealand I need to be able to understand anything he sends over to me quickly and easily.
