I’ve not touched the ignition override key, but I’d expect the same symptoms when that’s turned.

So possibly related to that ?

Also check the condition of the connector to the ignition control box in the boot. A poor connection or frayed wiring there can cause what you described. It happened to me so I re-terminated the connector.

And me, M4 outside late in rush hour, at a busy petrol station at the pump

- it was a sign the imobiliser was starting to pack up. A common fault when they go. I remember GrahamN had the same in his Gold Cerbera.
The immobiliser trips, takes out the fuel pump, ECU, starter motor. I had to disconnect the battery wait two mins and repower to reset the immobiliser.

I got mine replaced pretty quickly as it started happening very frequently.

Sorry, but for clarity.

You can start the car and drive. Then everything cuts out, and the car stops. Then you can restart it again, and it will run for x amount of time.

Have I got that right ? smile

Ignition will cut if the Crank Position Sensor is faulty

The wiring for the CPS is very close to the manifold, so if the heatshield is damaged, that could cause an intermittent fault

Are the windows half an inch open and they close fully when this happens

or

The windows are down and rise half an inch from their down positions wherever those positions may be?

Sorry to be a pain but every little bit of accurate information may help

If it is the Imobiliser Dave is a good guy, came to my house to fit, which was handy as it was very flakey and would cut out all the time.

Weird symtoms - total loss of power then connected again?
I had weird symptoms after my new engine was put back in. The earth lead from battery to chassis was frayed with two strands left. Why the fk that £20 cable wasn't changed when they put the engine in.... but that was just the start of a long list of issues...

Anyhow, turns out it was mostly making, then not when the engine moved, which gave me all sorts of weird symptoms. Wipers went, car cut out, rev counter wild, stereo reset...

Hi Byker Dave thanks for the input ....Yes Dave was very helpful yesterday nice chap helped me 5 yrs ago with new remotes .. He has also said it might be earth related

im not sure if I noticed a slight burning smell last week it always smells of something

when it cuts out the windows only shunt up a bit like when closing the door not close all the way

i changed a coil pack last week...that made no difference to the slight misfire i had and this cutting out has started after that.

have ordered a cable to connect to my pc to see if that throws anything up

im in Ireland at the moment with the car and if in uk i would drop it in to someone not so easy over here ive never seen another one..so have got to get it sorted to get it back to get it sorted so to speak

Do you think the car is momentarily losing all electrics ? Like a loose battery terminal or ground.

Or does it look like it’s just the ignition dropping out ?

There's an earth cable runs from the battery to the chassis and then a shorter one from chassis to engine.

What happens if you open the door (or try to) at 40mph? I was thinking that if the door sensor is flakey the ecu might think the door is open, and cut the ignition. If the loss of contact is brief and connection remade, the windows would go up. Maybe. If the windows are fully up, do they drop and/or courtesy light come on when the engine cuts out?

Edit: I guess cars are run on the rollers with the door open so maybe not. Perhaps problem with door control box?
