Master Cylinder Problem - Broken Spring!

Well the AA finally took my car to the garage on a low loader. A familiar problem to many - the clutch! I had no resistance at all, it was just swinging away. I tried to bleed it as is the normal starting place for all clutch problems on the TVR but to no avail.
I've had a call from the garage and they say they've fixed it. Apparently it was a broken spring in the master cylinder??

Has anyone encountered this problem before? I'll be honest, didn't even know this was a possible problem.
I've not used the garage before and want to check they're not spinning me a line.

I've changed the master cylinder seals and yes there is a spring in it. A seal kit is about £10 and an entire master cylinder about £30-60 (depending where you buy). Fitting the seals takes around an hour, so replacing the spring should be similar. If they've replace the whole master cylinder it will have taken around two hours (very fiddly due to access).

I understand the master cylinder is from a TR7.
