Cerb chassis worse than an old Griff

Can't believe that my Cerbera chassis 1998 is in a worse condition than mates 1992 Griffith !

So is the procedure
scrape, light sand, rust killer, hammerite then waxoyle ?

Did mine at weekend, but on first inspection only small patches of rust where the powdercoat had chipped. But when you start peeling back the coating around the chip you see how far the rust has spread, the coating acting as the perfect rust incubator.

I started by degreasing the chassis to reveal any damaged coating then scraped back powder coat around the rusty areas to clean metal, a sharp knife,chisel and plenty of swearing works well. Removed heavy rust with wire brushes drill and hand held variety. Spray Por 15 Metal ready to remove and neutralise rust. Finally top coat with Por 15 rust prevention paint. Spend rest of week trying to get the stuff off hands, face and arms, haven't succeeded yet.

I did the same on my last 95 Griff, didn't use Waxoyl as not impressed with the stuff, that chassis was perfect even 3 years later just needed the odd touch up once a year or so.

Not a fun job but worth while in the long run.

That's not good. Might explain why the previous owner of our '98 Cerbie managed to get a new chassis fitted a couple of years back. :yikes;

Where did you do it, on a 4 poster?
Also how long does it take? I can borrow a 4 post ramp but only for a day.

Mine took me 6 full days work when I fitted new springs and dampers. Had the car up on axle stands. Knackered a good chisel, a scraper and wore out 3 wire brushes and 10 knuckles. Nearly used a 100 box of latex gloves too.

Gave mine 2 coats of smooth Hammerite. Just need to Waxoyl now before the wet weather is upon us again.

I hate to say this but when I took the body off my old 1600M (it was 21 years old at the time) the worst bits of chassis were the bits you could not see nor get to.

All the exposed stuff was reasonable, I had to replace a few of the tubes but the stuff that was out of sight was pretty rotten, I had to replace a fair bit of it.

Of course taking the body off a cerbera would be a real pain and I'm sure none are that bad but I would suspect that as the years roll on there will be some very sorry chassis tubes.

the tubes under the mainfolds and up to them seem to be badly affected - mine are ... joolz on a previous thread said he has replaced quite a number already!

well worth fixing as best as you can before the winter ... but I dont want to take mine off the road too long now the summers almost with us ...

all part of the joys of ownership I guess!!
