Hi, this is my first post but I have found the forum to be super useful over the past few months! I have hit a bit of a block now though.

I'm nearing the end of the engine rebuild and restoration on my 1998 4.2 Cerbera. It ran fine around 4 months ago, the starter motor worked with no problems. The engine is back in the car and everything is hooked up. I can turn the engine over by hand. The ignition turns on fine and the SPA oil/water digital gauge comes to life, the fuel pump also primes although I have now taken the fuse out for that and the ignition coils. When I press the black start button and hold it down to start it, everything cuts out. The starter motor doesn't turn over at all. The lights all go off on the dash, the gauge goes blank.

Once this happens, I try to turn the ignition back on but no lights show, it's as if the battery is completely flat. After maybe 5 - 10 seconds the alarm goes off. After 20 - 30 seconds the ignition will come back on using a combination of locking/unlocking the car (the alarm normally sounds a few more times for good measure) and pressing the black start button.

The battery is showing 12.68v. I've read the other starter motor failure posts but they describe a clicking sound from the solenoid which mine does once and never again. Any suggestions on what I can check next? Could it be the solenoid is shorted?

Thanks!

Nevermind!

Probably should've checked before posting. The battery has had it.... Drops to 7 volts when trying to crank. I put some jump leads on it and it turned over fine.

biggrin

Easy fix and a lot cheaper than a starter, good result!
