I cannot remember if I have asked this before but why do the fans come on at different temperatures? Why not just have one electrical circuit and have them both come on at the same time ie at the temperature the first one comes on at. All our cars get very hot and it seems like it is made difficult for a reason. Anyone know?
My understanding is the first fan which cuts in at the lower temp, for most part when you are moving along, is able, on its own, to cope with keeping the system at the rightish temp. However, when stationary, and with no airflow, the 2nd fan then cuts in at a higher temp to assist the first....
FYI my first fan cuts in around 90ish, and the second just below the 100. Rarely during the colder months of the year, do both fans come on, with car running at about 85-90 the majority of the time, and this time of year, about 90 most times, creeping upto about 100 occasionally.....(even in the heat and traffic to and from Le Mans, the car never got above 115 tops!)...

I've rewired mine along with the headlights to be fed directly from the battery. When I did this I took the opportunity to get both fans to come on at the lower temperature using a relay.
No adverse effects so far....
