Hi Folks, Has the world moved on or is waxoil still the best option for outrigger protection. Don't normally drive when salt is on the road, but I'm trying to get the miles in on the rebuild.

I've been making these for peoples cars for a few years now. Both front and back. Best form of protection against stones chipping the powder coat, 1 of the many stainless steel items I've made to prolong the life of our cars.

All useful but in reality but most of our TVR's the steel has already rusted too far on the outriggers to be worth saving.

Replacement is the solution.

You're missing the bit about protecting them once they've been replaced... wink

Sorry should have specified. It was an engine rebuild. Just got it back from powers. Cars been away for 16 months or so and just want to drive it. Outriggers seem solid and, at some point it will need a body off, but for now I just want to use it and a joy it.

Waxoil is horible - I spent two weeks cleaning it off mine with white spirit. Dinitrol clear works well, but so does regular cleaning. The corners of the outriggers trap dirt, mud, small stones from the roads, so a test tube brush is perfect for getting in there with a regular clean.

Pete, for your outrigger protectors, are they permanently attached, can you take them off to clean behind, or do they stop most?

They are semi permanent, they are easily unbolted from the mounts, however there is a risk that you'll need to reseal the rubber to the stainless shield.

If they are fitted correctly and sealed at the top there should be no need to remove them. They have a lip at the bottom to deflect away from the underside of the car. They are open at the engine side and underneath to allow air to circulate.
