Catalytic Convertors for MOT - what does everyone do?
Discussion
I have my MOT on Tuesday and it's a new garage, so they have asked me to bring the Catalytic Convertors I have with me
Does everyone who has a de-catted car just switch them in and out each time, or is there a better way of achieving an emissions pass without having to do so?
I've never actually ever had them fitted to my car as it came with straight through pipes fitted, but I'm tempted just to leave them in this time if they do fit them just to save with the hassle
All thoughts / experiences welcome!

I've recently fitted my cats for my MOT and I must say, I do like NOT smelling of car fumes whenever I have been working on the car while the engine is running.
I know there will be more heat coming through gear stick, but I will be fitting some new heat shield on the exhaust shield, see if that helps. If it doesn't help I'll put the decats back in.

That's great to hear, many thanks, and yes I think I'm going to go a similar route as my car is _really_ noisy - I know that Paul (ukkid) says his gets super hot but then he's doing big trips and tracking his - mine is largely going around Westminster at 20mph I know there will be more heat coming through gear stick, but I will be fitting some new heat shield on the exhaust shield, see if that helps. Also - would be interested on what you use for your hear shielding if you go that route - I remember seeing some cool looking gold stuff someone used on here for their rebuild

I bought some 100 cpsi cats and welded them in to a decat H pipe I'd got. I changed the standard aluminised fiberglass that covers the exhaust heatshield to some more solid aluminium stuff like this https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/EXHAUST-EMBOSSED-HEAT-S... I also formed it to shape and fitted a section to the rear gearbox mount. Gearstick stays cold so it's all good.

Before you start heading down a route spending money on cats if its just for the MOT, just check with the garage what their intentions are. It may depend on their level of experience with TVRs.Does everyone who has a de-catted car just switch them in and out each time, or is there a better way of achieving an emissions pass without having to do so?

I won't write on here what my garage does, but the solution is sometimes easier than you'd think.
And before anyone asks, yes mine does pass the emissions each time!!!!
PM if you need to know more.
Best of luck with whatever you do!

No idea what happens now, but I put them in a box in the boot. In the past I paid an hours time to have them fitted for the MOT then reverted.
I took mine out just to stop the heat in the cabin and all the heat that goes through the clutch/gearbox. I can happily hold my gearknob now in all weathers.
Downside is the 8-10db they add to the noise, which is why I went the the ACT quiet system years ago.

never understood the removal of cat´s...your engine will still have enough power and de-cating will not give you 20BHP...you may gain noise which often people mis-interprete as gain of power.
this said, your car is taxed and insured under a certain emmission class, which ould not be applied to the car without cat´s

It's all about the heat they give off for me...this said, your car is taxed and insured under a certain emmission class, which ould not be applied to the car without cat´s
Heat for me too.. My 4.2 would hot stall in traffic until I decatted it.. It also solved the burning left leg come summer time..
The 4.5 came decatted with one of the supplied cats having a hole straight through the honeycomb... So it's staying decatted.. But even then, I wouldnt put the cats back on because of the heat.
