OK, I love my Cerb - but I feel at high speed...on less than perfect roads it does lack some composure. Tram-lining and being a little 'skittish'.

Basically I like the ride firmness on the Cerb (I guess the springs and their firmness rating), but I think (I maybe guessing here) the dampening could do with a bit of fine tuning.

I know lots of people replace the standard suspension set up with Nitrons and various other 3rd party gear. So I am wondering if anyone can give me a non-technical bods description of what improvements I can get...e.g could I get it to be as composed as a 911 doing 100mph or so...

Hi Their

I think there's no doubt you'll get lots of improvements in handling if you upgrade your suspension .

You would also be wise to check what tyres you're running? I ran S03's on my car and it was a death trap and made me sad .

Changed to a relatively budget tyre in the Falken FK451 and the car is excellent again .

I can honestly say that if I'd test driven the car on S03's I might never have bought one ever .

Try e-mailing Jools AKA Trackcar on pistonheads and ask his advice.

Jools comes highly recommended .

Cheers Duncan, so you think my Bridgestones Potenza S03s may be the problem...ummm...I will have to investigate.

Not sure I like the idea of putting cheap rubber on...but.

Anyone else concur with this sentiment about Potenza S03s??

I have to agree with DuncanM, I had some Falken FK451's fitted and they are so much better than the SO3's, especially in the wet! I also just had some Protec suspension sorted by Joolz and the handling has been completly changed. The ride at higher speeds now is very smooth, it's worth giving him a ring as he is the god about these things!!

Put it this way. They were so bad on my car I complained to Bridgestone and made them buy them back off me!

Falken FK451 is a GREAT tyre on the TVR Cerbera in my and other peoples experience.

Try them .

Thanks guys - I will look into these tyres.

Good to see my Cerb isn't dodgily set up!

...n.b. Rules you have to agree to before posting a reply?..on PH? it's all getting rather formal - who brought the lawyers in?

I also had S03's on my car and used to suffer tramlining etc. It could be worth checking your tyre pressure to start with and maybe try a few psi less than normal to see if that helps.

The S03 has been discussed on here a few times, and there were some pressure recommendations on those threads, so could be worth checking out.

For me, I changed to Goodyears and the improvement was dramatic. This is all on the original 16" wheels though.

I may change to 17", but will probably stick with Goodyear, but the Falkens sound good too.

Tyres are a bit like engine oil, its all a bit subjective and emotional, but most top end products are very good these days.

Sorry but I disagree with this!

The tramlining and general unruly behaviour of my car with S03's was anything but subjective.

It was horrible and ruined my enjoyment of the car completely .

Falken's are great yay!.

Oh rules of posting, thats new!

Anyway!

I had SO3's on my car and it was a death trap! Changed to Toyo T1S or R's (the latest ones anyway) and it was like a different drive, much much better.

Ditch the SO3s.

Ok so established these Bridgestones are questionable (ensuring I stay within the newly defined legal parameters of postings...).

What kinda money I am looking at for a set of
a. Falkens
b. Toyos

Nothing wrong with SO3's in my experience... just need to spend plenty of time getting your suspension and ride geometry set-up to your liking...

Like duncan mentioned, Joolz is your man.

Do remember though, the SO3's need to be bedded in just right, otherwise they just dont perform... rather than use soft tyre compound like the others, bridgestone took a different route - so they may not be to everyones liking....

I put that statement in there because I knew Ash would be along and he likes S03s

I think if you can find a tyre that you like (like your Falkens and my Goodyears) then thats all that matters. I didn't find the S03s to be that great on my car, with my setup and my driving, but others may have a different experience. S03s might be great in 18" sizes for all I know, but its not relelvant to me

The Goodyears are lasting well, even including a couple of track days.

Before you get all bent out of shape and emotional...

No one is quoting wheel or tyre sizes or tyre pressures or whether the car started out with 16 in and is now running 23 wheels with a scraping of rubber....

Believe it of not the tyre forms part of the suspension and the tyre flex is part of that equation. Going to a lower profile means that the tyre wall is a lot stiffer as there is less of it to flex. Tyres themselves have different tyre wall stiffness. Toyos are floppier compared to Bridgestones. Floppy sidewalls will cause distortion on cornering and reduction of the contact patch - this is a bad thing. Changing the tyre pressure will also affect this sidewall stiffness. So changing anything on the wheel/tyre combination is like changing springs and shocks. The more extreme the changes the more extreme the effect. In practice the suspension should be adjusted/tuned to balance the car up again. However how many people do that? As a result it can turn into a bit of a lottery.

So this whole thing is not black and white.

I run S03s on 16 inch wheels at a couple of pounds less than normal and they are quite superb.

I've been running SO3's on 18" rims and the tramlining is worse than any other tyre i've tried to date. Not believing a tyre could be this bad, I had the geometry checked after a 1000 miles use and, after camber and toe adjustments, the car is now really quite stable.

If you haven't already done so, I'd reccommend a full geometry check as a cheap first step then look at the dampers if things still don't feel right.

Try running a higher profile tyre, or downsizing the rim size & upping the profile.

Geometry check might help but I guarantee higher profiles will improve it no end.

I am running on standard 17" 4.5 alloys - so I will reduce tyre pressure and see if this makes a difference. But the issues are mainly at high speed - so I am thinking pressure is not going to do too much, and obviously I don't want to be doing high speed on a low pressure set up.

It is all going to be a bit of an expensive gamble though, as new tyres are going to be a few hundred (if not per corner!)...and suspension into the thousands and I have heard issues with endless fiddling with fitted adjustable suspension settings.

So I think pressure first, air is cheap. Then look into tyres - at lest this will give me an excuse to rip my present ones apart - thanks all!
