Fire Extinguisher

I want to mount an extinguisher somewhere in the cockpit, I was thinking of on the floor tucked in front of the passenger seat, only thing is don't want to fix to bottom of seat and not sure about drilling holes in the floor, have any other Cerb owners mounted one there?

I haven't bothered mounting it as such, but mine tucks neatly in just behind the drivers seat, and does'nt move around too much

on the bottom of the back of my passenger seat there are 2 screws (screwing nothing in!) so I used one of them to secure the bottom mounting hole on the bracket and did it up *quite* tight to keep the ext mounting upright. Works ok and doesn't rattle around.

Mine is rattling around in the boot where it handily will be should I ever have the misfortune of a fire, no doubt any fire will most probably stop the boot opening, leaving extiguisher tantilisingly out of reach.

Slightly off topic, but for those (like us) with TVR child seats, the metal mounting is ideal to attach fire extinguishers to. Two tie-wraps, and Robert's your mothers brother. Easy to get to, too.

Incidentally, Supermarchees in France are an excellent place to get car extinguishers: ours was 18 Euro in June.

Got mine off eBay for about £15 IIRC. Comes in a nice mock carbon fibre 'bottle'

Velcro is IMO not safe, last thing you want is the firex coming loose in an accident and bouncing round inside the cabin. It's important that it is secured properly, if it's secured into fibreglass that means using something to spread the load for example.

So maybe through floor mounting, bolting into sandwich plate or large washers is preferable?

Yes, mine is bolted through the floor (sideways under the driver's knees) with penny washers underneath to spread the load, and I think this is adequate. The scrutineers seem quite happy with it too.

Got my car an extinguisher for my birthday.
Am wondering where to mount it. Thinking about 'under' the rear seat ie there is a box section of fiberglass but you cant access underneath. though maybe I could screw it so would sit kind if under my kids knees.
Any one got a top suggestion?
also though about making up a plate that could attach to the screws on the bottom rear of passenger seat and then attach extinguisher to that plate.

I've got mine mounted in the Helmet hole at the mo, but I'm not sure how long it is going to stay there for

Got mine mounted in the footwell behind the passenger seat. Drilled 2 holes through the floor and bolted it in with stainless bolts..

2 of them in the boot – velcroed to the side near the fuse. They’ve not moved in a long time.

mines mounted sideways immediately in front of the drivers seat. Dont buy a large extinguisher though as your legs will rub on the top of the bracket.

It'll be fine there right up to the point where you have an accident. Then you'll be hunting for your extinguisher and the remains of the fibreglass body panels it took with it on the way out ...

I might make up some ally brackets that can be attached to the floor behind the passenger seat and then a halfwits extinguisher can be attached (thus spreading the load across the floor etc).

If you use the correct grade of Velcro, it will be strong enough ( well stronger than the GRP or the fire exting bracket ). BUT it still has to be properly attached to the car, i.e. NOT self adhesive, but through bolted with large washers or plates on both sides ( i.e. on the velcro AND behind the GRP )to spread the load. Since you have to do this anyway, why bother with the Velcro? Unless of couse you are using it instead of the bracket. ( some brackets at the budget end of the market are so flimsey that in the event of an accident the fire ext will leave the bracket, however well that is secured to the car.....)
