Help Battery

The car has not had a long run for a while and when I tried to start her this morning it would not fire. It turned over slowly then the alarm came on and the door opened lights started flashing the whole show.
I have just tried to charge the battery and when I remove it, the alarm goes off??? How do you charge the battery if the alarm goes off when you remove it???

I was just in a bit of a flap had the car just over a year now and this is the first time it has not started. I wanted the car for the weekend but visit the folks but it looks like I will have to take the other car.

If its not totally flat, would a trickle charger via the cig lighter not do the trick?
