Gear Box Oil - Checking

Gearbox oil: checking it now hard is this, can it be done with just jacking the car up (on to Stands) I’ve heard you need the hands of a small child to get to it?
I understand that the oil is Mobil SHC ATF 220 having the later version of the in-car manual (if you could call it that) that mentions Carlube something or other.
Now searching the forum I’ve found that there’s a plug on the side of the gearbox which can only be accessed from below (which side is this, is it a metal plug/ rubber one)? How do you top up from underneath?

The Gearbox filler plug is on the O/S of the gearbox, about half way up, and is a 3/8 square drive.
The easiest way to fill is to get a clean piece of hose, garden hose is fine, but make sure the missus hasn't been using it to water the garden!!
Most DIY places stock clear tubing, and a few feet of 12 or 15mm dia is ideal, run the tube up between the manifold and chassis and fill from above, using a funnel or....
I use one of these when refilling from empty.
As for oil type, Dexron 3 ATF is fine....if you don't want to mix brands, then drain via the other plug...can't remember from memory which side of the 'box it's on, but its fairly obvious. Then simply refill via the filler/level plug...when it starts pouring on the garage floor, it's at the correct level. The box holds just over 2 litres.

Paul thanks for the reply i will have look tonight, got some new brakes to fit on the back first!
is it easier to get the plug from underneath, or removing the cover near the wiper and going down from the top that way?

Underneath is the way to go, not a chance of getting to it from above unless you have a physique like Gollum!!!!
