...as to what the cover between the rads and engine on a 4.5LW is supposed to do?

It just seems a bit of a waste of time to me!

I'd guess it's something to do with airflow under bonnet but dont know for sure. i do know that when I removed the liitle aluminium air deflector beneath the front chin of my car on a speed hump the engine ran 3 or 4 degrees hotter so they must be fairly sensitive to airflow. needless to say the little deflector is back on now

Probably directs the hot air from the rad down under the car , keeping it away from the induction system.

Having changed the water pipes I have run mine without the panel, to keep an eye out for leaks or chafing pipes, and it doesen`t seem to make too much difference to the performance or running temp.

Still plan to re fit the panel, once I am confident in my handywork !
