Can you remove the engine front cover with the engine in situ or is it an engine out job?

If its got aircon then no, if not then yes. Be careful when you remove the cover, as the idler gear between the crank and the PAS/water pump will fall away with its associated thrust washer, so make sure you know where all the relevant bits and bobs need to go back in.
