headlamp bulb spec and wiring

To save me taking the car apart to have a look, does anyone know off the top of their head what bulbs are in the Hella units used in headlamp conversions, both main and dip (not the HID versions) For some reason mine are absolutely terrible. I have only had the car since June and now the nights are closing in a bit the abscence of light from my headlights is getting a bit dangerous! (had a nightmare on some country lanes in tha dark last night coming home from CREAM)
I have been into the wing once and noticed that the wiring to the headlamp conversion seemed a bit on the thin side, so I am hoping that re-wiring with thicker wire will allow a bit more power to the bulbs, but whilst I am at it I may as well put more powerful bulbs in too. Additionally, when going from dip to main beam, the dips go out as the mains come on. This lights up the road a long way off, but leaves a dark area infront of the car whic would be filled by the dips. My Griff had a converison too and the dips stayed on when the mains came on. I am guessing this is handled by one of the black boxes in the boot and so may be more difficult to do on the Cerb, but can anyone tell me if it can be done and how to do it?
Finally, any trick for aligning the lamps properly, or is it just a case of pointing it down a dark road and seeing what looks best, which is frankly difficult as both front wheels have to come off to adjust the lights!
