Hot starting problem....

Had a wicked day in the cerb today....about seven hours of driving....3 city's....numerous towns and enough A roads to last a life time!!!!! The car was awesome....showed my mates what a trick peice of kit it really is (and sounds like:))......only problem is that just recently it has stalled when hot a few times, while sitting idling in traffic. Just drops revs all of a sudden and if you dont catch it quickly enough it dies. Starts straight away after though????
Any ideas what it may be??

Yep had this myself especially after giving it some welly then trying to start again after a brief stop...go to pull away and hey presto you stall looking like a right I think you just need to allow for this...evaporation of the fuel due to heat I have been told??????? total bull$h*t I dunno As I've said I just seem to allow for it now..bit extra right peg etc. etc. but I still do it now and then

Hmmmm, thats what i was kind of thinking, but read somewhere about dodgy sensors (water???) giving the ecu false info and hey presto.....stalling????

And if that wasn't bad enough....some dic£ next door to the mother in laws decided to reverse into it last night "because he wasn't used to cars being parked there".....under a frigging street light!!! Just so inconvenient

Yes, I've had the problem repeatedly. Worse cases: every weekend this summer when I blatted up French motorway to Calais, then stalled 20 times as I went through customs and onto train. Very annoying. Much finger-pointing from other motorists... Same thing happens when I drive into London (can't avoid it - live there) Garages unable to replicate fault as unwilling to do the driving needed to provoke it (and are all out in the sticks anyway where there ain't no traffic jams!) Met a guy from a Cambridge TVR dealership at the Snetterton thing the other day, who said he had a customer with the same problem. My car currently being looked at again while I'm out of country: hoping to get it back tomorrow. They have suggested that a valve that vents the fuel tank needed replacing (which echoes your comment about "evaporation" so we shall see... Mine's a RedRose and so has the button to switch fuel mapping. Factory had suggested using 97 ron but with 95 ron fuel mapping as a solution to the problem. Didn't seem to make any difference... Sorry to hear you have the problem, but thank God it isn't just me - I was beginning to wonder if it was my fault (or my imagination).

Mine can stall when restarted, after its been stood for a short period of time, perhaps an hour, and the engine is still warm. I've also had it stall when stood at the lights like yourself, but only happened once. Are the revs at tick over too low. I altered mine some time back, as mine was too low. Was about 800rpm. Now 950rpm.

Exactly - can't maintain idle when hot. Temp gauge and oil pressure gauge start flickering like mad, revs die, you're creeping over a speed bump, can't keep the gas on. Stall. Guy behind smirks in German car. Very offpissing. The idle speed setting was upped, but that didn't solve the underlying problem. I'll let you know whether this fuel tank valve malarkey hits the spot.

Happened to mine twice I think just after I got the car. It was hot weather and stuck in traffic. Hasn't happened since although I did up the tickover slightly, was 800.
I was stuck in a two hour bumper to bumper jam last summer and despite the fans coming on almost constantly the car didn't even flicker so I guess it's not a problem any more. Had plenty other jams but no issues.

OH NO!!!!!! Yes it should have read "Hot STALLING"......would be intersted to hear more about the tank valve theory.....also, thanks to the rest for input....nice to know there are other sufferers out there!!!!!!

If you have aircon try running with it on as I'm sure I've read here that the aircon cars have the fuel pipes run through a cooler to stop fuel evaporation problems. I haven't dug around to see if thats the case.

If it works then you know whether its that or the purge canister.

My understanding (having worked on turbo'd french cars!) is that evaporation would only happen when the engine is off and fuel in pipes is stationary resulting in hot starting problems????? (Hence the need for recall anti-perc fans on said cars!) Or am i thinking a bit too simplistic?
