I need some advice....
The purple inlet pipes on my 4.5 have had their day (squashed and have a small hole in one) and the following seem to be the options:
(1) Get an induction kit fitted at Austec, along with a re-map to make them work properly. Hmmm, could be in trouble with the wife:nono:. That's a job for early 2006.
(2) Buy new ones at, apparently £37 + VAT each:eek:. That's the best part of £350 and the induction kit is only around the £750 plus VAT mark. I'd rather spend the money on the induction kit but that would mean managing until next year.
I did hear of one of the dealers selling them off cheaply as a job lot but I don't who.
So, before I try ringing round, can anyone help?

I dont know if Austec still have my old purple pipes from when I had the ACT kit fitted? They where OKish when they came off. Maybe give Paul a ring and see if they have them lying about still? If they have and will post them out to you, you're welcome to them (for a small donation to Austec's and my favourite charity, St Catherine's Hospice, Crawley
). Will keep you going 'til you are brave enough to let the Mrs know you are going to have the induction kit fitted? 
Mind, it was a few weeks ago, so they may have binned them by now. Its only a phone call

Most TVR purple pipes have a squashed appearence and the small hole in one of them will make liitle or no difference to your cars performance. Replacing them with a better condition second hand set, will not add any real benefit to you apart from buying you another couple of years serrvice from those pipes. The old ones that I had on my Cerb before I replaced them with shorter pipes were in a terrible state, at least three had a tiny hole in as well as the metal reinforcement spiking out....yet the car still produced 390bhp and 365lbs torque just from a remap, with the old pipes on.
Best bet is to look at the options on offer and then make your decision.
If you are happy with your cars current performance then the cheapest option is to buy the TVR original pipes at around £350, these will just directly replace the old ones with no mapping required and are a doddle to fit. (Wife friendly)
If you want to see performance improvements then you can still purchase the TVR original hoses at £350, but then have a remap at either of the esteemed Tuning Houses
, this should see you with around 390bhp +-10bhp. But this is another £1k on top of the pipes. (not so wife friendly
)
Another option is to go for an Induction Kit, which is basically replacing the TVR original purple pipes with some shorter hoses, with the ACT kit you get larger internal carbon trumpets, your airbox backplate is also modified to accomodate the new pipes, which have a smaller diameter than the TVR pipes 50mm v 70mm at that end. The diameter is maintained throughout the length of the pipe at 50mm. With this option you will need a remap to ensure correct fueling etc and in theory you should see a 5-15bhp gain maybe more against the standard induction set up and remap. The kit is £650 + VAT + two hours fitting + the remap. (Not wife friendly, so better make sure she gets what she wants for Christmas
)
Final option is to sit pretty and see what other options become available in the very near future.......
My set-up is a remap and pipe replacement. I wanted to ensure that I went down the shorter induction pipe route but wanted to maintain the 70mm-50mm pipe reducing diameter from airbox trumpet to engine inlet, this I am sure provides a more efficient flow of air over the same given distance than 50mm-50mm. Yes it is marginal, but it also eleviates the need to get the backplates altered, which initially was my main aim. The ACT kit I believe has the backplate modified to accomodate the 50mm pipe, but has the trumpets modified to provide the reducing effect but over a shorter distance, as the reducing effect has already taken place prior to the start of the pipe. The benefit of this backplate will also be the way that the trumpet is mated to the plate, as the TVR original is of a very crude design, the ACT backplate will offer improved efficieny of flow in comparison, provided this has been addressed, although how much is hard to quantify.
Plenty of options available......Hope this helps....

Its very interesting to read more info on this as I assummed my old pipes would be wiping off huge amounts of power, but maybe they're not so bad.
I looked at the ACT pipes at the Austec open day and they're very impressive. I think this is the way to go with a re-map as I'm convinced my car needs it
In the meantime, I'll keep my eyes out for some better purple pipes whilst I "save up!" (i.e. Keep the missus happy).
I did speak to the guys at Austec who said their bin was full of dozens of old purple pipes as they change then so often, but I haven't yet reached the stage of rummaging through rubbish bins yet (but may do soon with the prospect of spending on the cerb!!).
