The cerb is not too lumpy around town, but it is a little lumpy. And has a flat(ish) spot up until 2k, after which point it pulls strongly. All normal I understand.

But when the cars been properly warmed up, IF left standing for more than 10 minutes, it becomes very lumpy, and quite juddery. Another 5 minutes of driving is required for it to get back to normal. Its always been this way.

Is it normal then, for a cerb to be extra lumpy after warming up, and cooling for 10 minutes, then being started and driven again (in the proceeding 5-10 mins)?

Get it remapped!...transforms the car around town, as well as out of it!

I will, in time.

But what of the *extra* lumpyness, that comes in after the car has heated up, then cooled a little? Im not worried at all, just wondering if other peolpes cars do this?

Not £ready£ to do anything yet, but can austec sort ported and flowed heads out? (as well as the remapping) This seemed like the biggest/best gain one up from a remap, without talking silly money and silly power.

I would guess the lumpyness is down to the poor mixture settings within the original mapping at lowish RPM. Add some heat when the car is static after a run, and then you start to get some evaporation of fuel, causing the fuel mixture to be even worse, and therefore even more lumpy than usual until cleared.

Just a remap on its own should see improvement both in the low RPM/speed areas as well as the top end BHP/Torque areas

Some of what you are experiencing ukbob is heat soak from the hot engine bay into the fuel system, that will never improve from a remap.

there may be issues also which are adding to this which may be cured by a remap though.

If austec have been looking after the servicing of your car then you can rest assured that all the known service-failure items will have been looked at in the course of general servicing, on that basis you should think about having the fuel system lagged to minimise any heat soak issues, and also speak about remapping as there are tricks you can employ to help with these kinds of situations.

I've just done a cerbera MBE remap and the tweaks we've done in the software have reaped good rewards on smoothness, also made 390hp

That's an interesting comment Joolz!

Does this mean that you provide a choice out of MBE remap and Emerald now then?

Good stuff .

could it not also be the plugs fouling up? ie too colder plug?

Bob,
Get your car up to Julz for a proper check up,
untill you have done this you have no base line to work from.

Indeed we do For some reason the torque isn't up to emerald standards though .. I don't know why but the mbe cars always fall short when i test this out.

The top end is the same, made 390hp from a 60k mileage car so no worries over how strong the engine is in this car .. but he torque was 354 lbs. Still a healthy margin up on std before mapping but not as good as we normally see emeralded. Mind you at half the price (400 quid) it's not to be sniffed at.

Maybe it's to do with he signal and the actual opening point of the injectors but the emerald is still giving us more midrange than the mbe. Curious.

UKB .. Nickcc is right though .. get the car checked to mae sure it's ok .. Nick's own car went from 350ish hp to over 400 at surrey with no mapping and just making sure it was set up properly. It's a red rose 4.5 so it's now bang on the money, but hadn't been well set up by the service agent used previously and it was costing the car 50bhp! Paul at Austec will be able to advise you no probs on how your car is health wise

Jools, It doesnt make sense to use your services, as you're far-far away, it would be easier to visit Austec whenever needed to do main jobs (and tweaking)... but did you say the emerald job costs 400 quid??

And erm (I know its been done before) which chip, when chipped, prevents the air con from working?

Whilst we're gassing, my air con unit makes a funny spitting compressor type sound. Never used to. Started doing it recently. And I was told by the dealer its fine, just leave it (any comments, oh wise and knowlegable cerbera guru?)

The way I read it, it made it sound like the MBE is £400 and the Emerald is £800?

its the final "with vat, with labour, with the chip and everything sorted" figure im intersted in.

I got the impression austec was around the £1000 mark.

Neither route prevents the air con working .. the rumour was that the MBE had some clever control over the air con, but it doesn't .. it just switches it out at full throttle .. I thought there was some clever over-revving cutout thingy going on but it just keeps the air con spinning until the engine stops revving .. seems there was some mis-information floating about at one point about what cleverness was in the mbe control for the air con. They're both the same for compressor protection from over-revving ie no protection lol.

the emrald route works out just slightly over 1k if no other work needed, but it is the best one for power through the whole range from my experience now of mapping both systems. I'm convinced it's an injector timing issue, as everything else is identical, but the mbe is just not showing the same midrange poke as the emeralded cars, that's why i've done the mbe cheaper at 400 pounds .. well for a start there's no ecu to buy but it's not as good (with our mapping so far anyway) at getting the midrange .. like i say i don't know why though. I'm calling the mbe chip the SR chip after the clever chappie who did the software for me, top bloke so only right to have an acknowledgement

Does the MBE remap smooth out the response? I'm more interested in that than getting more power -- it's a 4.2 and there's plenty of power for me already! Presume it's 400+VAT, or all in?

if you don't want any extra power there's a really neat trick you can do to get the part throttle fuelling right, assuming you have good condition lambda sensors in your car you don't even need a rolling road!

It makes the car non-mot friendly though so you'd need to put your old chip back in for mot time, and you'd have to run decats also as the cats would not like the slightly richer mixture.

the pricing structure varies accordiong to what you have done, so you might like to choose any option from a menu list of features unlocked in the ecu, each one adds 25 pounds to the cost. so it'd be something like 400 plus vat for any fuel or ignition changes plus 25 poudns for each additional feature like changing the fan cut-in points, the shift light/beeper point, switching the fans out for hot starting, switching the air con out at high revs etc etc etc .. it's pretty neat and means you spend the money on what you want. Most of these are in the emerald and i do them anyway and are user-configurable afterwards at any time, on the mbe yuo have to specify at the time the chip is done.

joo,
Any options for multiple maps, One for more spirited driving with another for boring motorway mile munching. maybe even an MOT map.
If you can duplicate the EPROM plug on the board there is no reason while one or more maps can not be used.

This is possible with the Emerald, as you can save the current settings to a floppy disc.
Once saved, you can then use the laptop to make alterations for a given purpose, and then change back to your original map after.
I know you can even add pops and bangs to suit the occassion too!
Not too sure about an "MOT" map....I think you have more chance with a TVR MOT, friendly garage!

Hello Pady,
Yeah, I was refering to the MBE unit, I have heard that mapping a high compression engine like mine holds few benifits.
Putting a second chip into the MBE would not be to hard, you would need to find the power to the Eprom and create a switch for that power to wake the chip up.
I would be interested in mapping for fueling as this could, I would have thought produce a smoother though not more powerfull engine.
Nick.
