Hello
just a quick one, got a new battery for the cerb on the way which is the Varta one as people say its a good un! anyway, ive also noticed from the forum that apparantly the battery tray needs to be modded to get it in...
so the quesiton is....
wait for it....
how?

I'm sorry to say you cant modify the battery tray, the battery fits snugly into a recess which is part of the n/s inner wing, if the battery it taller or wider than the recess forget it! If the battery fits but is longer you may be able to modify the clamping bracket that holds it in the recess to allow for a longer battery, but were only talking about a centimetre or so.
Take the battery tray out and this will give you a good few cms. However, make sure you fill the holes where the bolts went with silicon filler(bathroom stylie) otherwise your passenger footwell will turn into a swimming pool.
It may also be a good idea to get some velcro pads from B&Q. Stick one side to the car and one side to the battery. Won't move an inch! - lovely...

i tried the Varta and it didn't fit the -ve lug was too high to fit under the wing.
I did the same thing when replacing our battery. Was told National Tyres was the best (cheapest) place, so went down there & was given a Varta : 570 072 051
However, after much cursing & knuckle bashing, I took it back and got a Unipart GBA3072 (which fits properly in the wing & has the recessed lugs). The added benefit of the Unipart is that it's got an extra 30 cranking amps, but is the same price as the Varta.....
Good luck !

Haven't had the cover off yet but I can see my battery is a type 072. The previous owner told me that if the car is left locked and alarmed for more than 3 days, the battery will be dead. Is this par for the course or is my battery pants?
Anyone tried using dry cell racing batteries such as a varley red-top?

I would say thats pretty pants.
My battery used to last 3 weeks no probs then I changed it for another 072 (Lucas I think). I was stupid, my fuse had blown and I forgot to check it and put a new battery in instead. Now, 6 weeks is fine, 10 weeks it will crank over plenty but just doesn't have enough juice to spark it. Haven't tried anything in between that.
Right. Where is this mythical 'big fuse'. When I snare it, how do I know it's indeed sh4gged?
6 Weeks sounds more reasonable. I know the alarm is a Meta System but I can't see how that would pull all the power considering I used to have the same type of alarm on a bike and the batteries are tiny on them!

Do a search for 'big fuse'. There's been loads of threads and a couple have pictures. It's basicall down the back of the engine bay underneath a plastic cover (you need to take off the trim at the window/battery area to see it). Looks like a little bit of aluminium. It usually cracks, can't always see but classic signs of it going are battery not charging, rev counter bouncy, etc.
I keep a spare in my ashtray next to an oil pressure relief spring, just in case.
