I was thinking of lowering my car a little more, but it looks like I don't have much chrome rod left at the top of my shocks (Nitrons) before the bumpstop.

I'd say I have about "1.5 of shock travel left before the bumpstop, with the suspension under normal load.

Does this sound about right? Is there some special shortstroke shock one should be using?

Yup .. if you go lower you move the top of the damper body closer to the spring assister (or bump stop if you like) ..

to run lower you should really have short damper bodies and much stiffer springs ..

Can my existing Nitrons be modified, or is it new shock time?

You could do a lot worse than have a chat with Guy at Nitron (01993 849449). He's been very helpful whenever I've spoken to him.

Steve.

Nitrons can indeed be modified, i think the costs are 50 pounds for the labour plus whatever parts they use.

Groovy! I've email-ed Nitron, but will call them if the don't get back to me.

Joo, can you recall if mine were normal or short stroke? Pushing it, as it was 2 years ago!

Thanks!

Just a wee warning. When I had mine, I lowered it significantly. I then hit big problems with brake cooling on track days - I even lost the brakes totally at Knockhill. I recall Garth (NI) lowered his and hit similar problems.

I lifted the height a wee bit and also put on some 'scoops' on the front of the lower wishbones to get some air into the disks. You might want to think about brake cooling if you go low. I was always plotting relocating the indicators and running pipework from the indicator holes to the brakes, but never got round to it.

Hi Willie, what ride height did you use on yours? You had Avos?

Yup, it was Avos I had. 'twas a wee while back, before everyone worked out Nitrons were the way to go. As to height, I can't remember, but I did set it 'as low as it would go' initially without grounding or rubbing. Looked cool, handled well....but lost the brakes on track days!

Yes, I can see that brake cooling would be a problem. How is your new project? Are you still thinking of LPG (I see practical performance car has an article about this month)
