What chip is in my car?

I was having a poke around the passenger footwell and noticed that someone has used permanent marker to write on my MBE unit - "273 chip fitted". It's a very early 4.2 with clatter cams.

Does anyone know what this means?

yeah, sounds like the stuff i do on ecu casings .. so i might have written it there maybe.. i used to put stuff like that on the casing so i knew what I'd done to the car beforehand.

on teh remapped cars I do now there's a virtual essay on the casings of what's on the chip fitted ..

273 means it's about the 4th or 5th generation std factory chip, but before the starter protection came into being.

Thanks for the info. I was guessing that someone had updated the chip and had written a note to that effect. Mine is the 29th off the production line and I know it has had some updates along its life. Now of course, you've raised another question What's the starter protection mod? And should I get it?

if yuor car is a very early one it would have had something like a 252 chip in originally ...

the start thing just prevents the engine firing until the engine has spun a few revs on the starter .. an attempt to try to stop premature starter motor failures as the engine kicks back agaist the starter if the battery is starting to fail. it alows the engine to *get a bit of speed up* on the starter before it fires
