Check the oil is important i know (4.5), but why did they have to put a pipe across the top of the dipstick??? This can't be good for the pipe...
Also lovely clean oil and by the time the stick is out of the rabit warren i can't tell how much bloody lube is in there!
Relying on the oil pressure of 70lbs to tell me everythingn is ok....

It is very important to use the oil readings rather than rely on oil pressure (and ensure oil is at top line rather bottm or middle. The oil pressure relief springs lose their tensile (sp?) strength over a few months and so your oil pressure will change between spring changes.
Sounds like people who use the oil pressure light to decide on top ups. It happens!

Best method of reading oil level is to leave car overnight on level surface.
Lean in from near side wing.
Pull out dip stick and wipe clean.
Push back in BUT dont twist back into place (ie the final bit) and then pull out.
Then use either (or both) side(s) of dipstick to take reading.
I tend to do this 3 or 4 times so as to ensure no smears have given me a dodgey reading.

It should be done cold.
Just checked to see if yours is a V8, and it is, therefore it should be cold as I said.
S6's are dry sump, so the oil should be warm. I think i'm correct in this.

The engines I test are always checked at operating tempearture.
Oil warmed up, engine then turned off and then checked.
Most oil levels are set at surge limits for the crank so that the crank is clear of the oil to prevent whipping which enduces aeration and power loss.
Have been doing that on lube survey engines and tilit rigs etc for 5 years for a lot of OEM's etc.
Idoubt there's a huge difference in the readings though tbh but it does depend on engine design.

Where I work we help determine the level of the oil and the marks on the dipsticks. I know of two engines that have my marks on.

You could also argue that if you were to only check your oil after the car had been standing for a long time you can get drain back into the engine and then once you've started and you've filled the oil circuit your oil level would then be low. Some oil circuits on inline 4 cyl engines can hold up to half a litre.
Dropping oil levels can free up many horsepower! But I wouldn't reccomend that unless you know what your doing. Same works in reverse though, slighest bit over max and you can sap horsepower too. One particualr engine I'm working on at the moment will loose about 5hp with the oil about 1-2mm over the max mark.
