Went to check the oil level tonight and the tank appears empty.

It does say in large letters to check the level when the engine is hot and the engine is cold and hasn't been run today but shouldn't there be something on the dipstick?

The engine is a speed 6. Now I'm reluctant to start it unless I put some oil in but obviously I don't want to overfil. Is this tank not supposed to have anything in when cold.
Can someone confirm this is right please.

Dry sump tanks can empty over time into the engine. However I would have thought that there should be some in there, all depends on the system. Some employ anti drain back pipe work so that it can't drain out.

I'm sure and S6 guru could enlighten you.

I might be wrong but I'm sure one of our Le Mans group said he checks hot because it sometimes looks like theres nothing there when he checks cold (aside from the fact that the manual says check hot).

Wouldnt get worried yet, the dip stick dousnt go anywhere neer the bottom of the oil tank so there probably a bit in their. Make sure the oil preasure is good and steady, check it a minute or so after its been switched off and hot. The temperature does make a fair difference to the level

All S6 related stuff is much better posted on the tuscan or S6 engine forums.
If it already has no oil then the engine is already stuffed so another start wont do any more harm !!!

Just me being paranoid - Plenty of oil in after I'd warmed it up. Kev had a good idea though, he suggested filling until a little bit was showing on the dipstick, then start her up and see if OK.
