I have black bits floating in the clutch reservoir and a very slight weep from the seal inside the car above the clutch pedal. Is this the master cylinder seal gone?

Has anyone changed a seal themselves and how difficult is it for someone who is ok with a spanner? It looks to be a bit of a pig to get at.

cheers

Spooky..... Replaced mine today....

I didn't have any bits in my fluid but once i stripped down the cylinder, It was full of black sludgy crap.

It isn't a bad job really. You will need an extra pair of hands when removing and refitting the cyclinder though. The bottom bolt is an absolute pig to hold still while tightening the nyloc nut underneath.

Remove drivers side airbox, this gives you more room and you will need it!!

Also, beware when refitting the pipe union to the cylinder. Very easy to get cross-threaded. Brass screwing into Aluminium, both soft metals.... just be careful.

I'd be happy to answer any questions, give me a call if you get stuck.

YHM with my number.

Hi Jes
How you doing, Mandy still talks about you after we met at castle combe a couple of years back when we both had to get those extra silencers, you must have made a good impression!

I’m afraid the chances are your slave is also gone, which I’m sure you know is a box out job. We just had ours done by Andy at APM as he was fixing 5th anyway. He fitted a heavy duty seal, he said would last a long time. The original was new about 8K miles earlier (not fitted by Andy) so I hope so..

You don't actually need to take the master cylinder out of the car .. you can do it all from in the driver footwell .. bit awkward when you're working upside down doing the circlip, but in all it should only take an hour or so from start to finish.

Brilliant. Thanks chaps. Looking forward to the rush of blood to the head whilst lying in the footwell.
