Hi all,

Can anyone who's had the electric power steering conversion help me with a couple of photos of the installation please?

I'd like to see where the pump is mounted, how hoses are routed and where the power is taken from. I guess it needs a relay - but I wonder where an ignition-switched supply is taken from to switch the relay?

Gonna do the conversion myself in the next week or so.

Thanks!

Andy.

Have you thought about just having the car as a standard drive, ie no power steering at all?

I must admit I like this with my Cobra. Not really a muscle car unless you have muscles is it?

What's the gearing on the Cobra's rack? I would've thought the two turns lock to lock would make the Cerb beyond macho.

Well thanks about the lock on the cobra and the front wheels on the Cobra are much fatter.

I think its not the muscles really just a different style of driving. You never turn the wheels on the cobra unless you are moving. Only a fairly small amount of pull and the then just hold it and start to move.

Its only a pain when stationary and needing to turn the wheels, but we shouldn't really be scuffing wheels like that anyway?

I had my conversion done by a dealer, there's a thread on the topic here. The pump is where the washer bottle used to be but it's covered by the panel. The power steering fluid filler comes up in the same place as the washer filler used to.

I don't know where the steering pump supply is taken off but it comes on with the fuel pump so I assume there is a relay from the same place. It has a 100A fuse fitted near the pump, so I must have one of the few Cerberas with TWO of these.

I tried this for a little while. It's just about alright when you're on the move but low speed manoeuvring is very very difficult. A replacement steering wheel about a yard across might help.

OK Cap'n, read your thread, I had the same symptoms as you.

When they did the conversion for you, did they not use the same fluid reservoir, or does your pump have the reservoir on top of it?

Where did they move the washer bottle to?

I paid 160 for a pump (the correct Citroen one); I'll post here again when I've done the job with cost of hoses and electrics, exactly what I had to do and how long it took.

Meantime if anyone has any photos or more details I'd be appreciative.

Andy.

p.s. without PAS the steering is just TOO heavy!

The reservoir is on top of the pump and the washer bottle is off to the side, still under the same panel.

Mine was done by Harrogate Horseless Carriages. I could probably have got it done cheaper but I had a boat to catch...

I'd say overall the steering is slightly better as the assistance is more even and smooth. Maybe a little lighter too, but not much.

And did they cut a new hole in the panel for the washer filler cap?

Just a thought, could this system have a two (or more)position switch for vairiable assistance? maybe even a micro switch on the gearbox? Third upwards less assisance? maybe even a reohstat to achive speed sensitive active steering? Just thinking out loud.

I suppose if you slowed the pump down you'd reduce the steering assistance.

But the trouble is you'd need a pretty huge resistor to slow the pump down - if it draws 30 amps, you'd need a 360-watt resistor! (comparison: the little resistors you see in radios and PCs etc are typically a quarter or a third-watt).

Not really do-able.

Yep, same bottle and filler neck as far as I can see.
