...would it take to sort out a "slow" window on the car?

I am thinking of attacking this one evening rather than during the weekend - am I likely to still be working on it past midnight?

Basically my first attempt will be to take the door card off, clean up the contacts, lube the runners and replace everything.

The door card is just held on by a few allen bolts, so it shouldn't take you more than an hour or so, hopefully a lot less

Trying to do the same about the windows especially the driver's side one - Steve, stupid question, where are these allen bolts ?

I take it you have tried silicone spray on the rubber. Should speed them up by about 30% (maybe 32%!). Halfords sell it and it works a treat.

Good idea, but the window is slow to drop even with the door open, so it's definitely not the window seal that's stopping it.

Silicone spray is great. I use on my cerb and windows are great.
My E Class merc window was playing up. Merc quoted £200 to LOOK at it. I sprayed / soaked the window and the mechanism is now fine.

1) do all the things re lubricating the gears and runners

BUT ALSO NOTE

2) the later cars were fitted with an upgraded chip in the window control box which increased the load to the motors (and possibly the timings too) and hence the lift speed, which helped to balance the newer deeper figure 8 door seals, so if you are comparing with others that appear quicker you may have an early chip.

On the end of the door (by the catch) and on the underneath of the door.

Good luck wit the job - never tried it myself but be warned that the advice I got was that it's a two man job - specifically because when the last bolt comes away the panel has a tendency to drop off!
