EVENING ALL ...

my 4.2s been over pit for 3 weeks plus and yes the battery is almost flat...
(at least the chassis looks a bit better!)

was trying to remove the battery enough to charge it and undid the clamp..

angle iron clamp comes away Ok with the bolt ...

the problem I have is that the rusty baseplate the clamp bolts into has a
welded on captive nut that sticks up about 2cm that stops battery sliding
out ...

is this a normal detail and if so does the metal plate have to be removed
to get the battery out? ... if so Im screwed cos the heads of the bolts are fubar

sorry if cruddy explanation .. going to go out and saturate whole area with wd40 soon
...

of course my starter charger is flat also ... so will have a go starting her in the morning...

if I remove the red +'ve and connect my battery trickle charger to it and the negative to earth
would that be detrimental to any of the cars circuits?

thanks in advance DAS

When you remove the bolt and the angle iron bracket the battery can be slid out from the wing recess towards the engine, it just lifts over the welded on nut on the base plate.

evening Spartacus .. thanks for info ...

the Battery on my car is newish (less than 2 years

its a type 089 cant see the make

there is no play in the battery at all

without levering it from the bottom I can only get about 7mm lift on the
engine side thus 13mm still in the way

I realise the base plate is fixed whole length of battery so probably no help there...

I wonder if my battery is taller than standard?

I can see that it could be rammed in - ramming out not so easy - barb effect ...

Oh well hopefully I can get enough juice in her to start - than I will just have to go
fo a long drive or 3!!

Happy motoring .. DAS

charging worked - back on road hurrah ... will worry about battery removal later I suppose...

When you take the clamp plate off, you will reveal two additional nuts either side of the main nut that holds the clamp. Loosen these and the plate under the battery should slide out allowing removal of the battery.

In typical TVR fashion, those two bolts don't go into the chassis or even into a captive nut they just go through the fibreglass into a mastic secured nut & washer. It does mean that if the bolts are corroded (as mine were) then you can simply remove the n/s footwell cover (just pulls out) and peel back the carpet to expose the retaining nuts. Undo these and tap the bolts out, once the airbox is off even the biggest battery will come out easily. Don't forget to put mastic round the holes when replacing the nuts and also get a spare pair of hands.

Have fun
Mike.
