More Clutch pain
Discussion
I took the car out on Saturday and the gears seemed hard to find but drivable, Washed and polished her on Sunday and had trouble getting reverse, but found it. Got the end of the road put my foot on the clutch took it out of second and could not get it in gear again??? I had to stop the engine put it in first take me foot of the clutch and press the start button to bump start it in gear to get home. Went back in my other car and it looks like I've left fuild all down the road. With a puddle at the junction where I stopped. Does this mean the clutch has gone or just the seals. Also could anyone help with a ball park figure to get this sorted.
Cheers

I beleive its the slave cylinder though, so cross fingers will be slightly less than it could be to fix.
Sound like you both have slave seals gone.
It seems as if there is a batch of seals for the slave cylinders out there that are just not up to the job. When I replaced the seals in my car they had all swollen up and stretched, contaminated by the fluid. I used the up rated seals from Joolz which are a little more resistant to ingress of fluid

My problem is the pedal still has resistance?? When I got it going putting my foot on the pendal did seem to work a bit just not enough to to take it out of gear???
Cheers for any help
John
It sounds like the fingers have gone. This doesn’t allow the plates to clear and thus not letting you put it in gear.
As for the fluid it could be that you have rub the slave out so far that the fluid is escaping past the seals.
If it’s the fingers then get the seals replaced as well, if it’s just the seals the consider getting the clutch done at the same time, depending on wear and age.
The finger seals failing is a material failure. If your car has a warranty you can claim.

Thanks for the Slave Seals advise is this a big job, ie does the box have to come out to do the slave or is that the master??
Cheers
John
Exhaust off, propshaft out, gearbox removed, bell housing off, starter disconnected, slave removed and seals changed then the clutch its self, and rebuild in reverse.
I have done it twice, once for the clutch its self once for the seals. A local race car preparation centre will do it for £300 plus spares.

Hi Extra
I'm up for trying and thanks for the tip on a race prep place. I've spoken to a guy and he said he'd charge £100.00 to do it plus parts. He has asked that I call him back in 1/2 hour and he will price the slave as well.
What a good guy.
John
£100! I would take it! I used Carlow Engineering in South Benfleet, Essex.

that is normally the sign that the slave cylinder has gone it has happened twice on my cerb the last time with less than 6000 miles (thats another issue)you said that you had lost fluid have you checked in the reservoir if the fuild is low check around the bottom of the gearbox housing if there is fluid then its the slave cylinder or check in the drivers footwell if there is fluid there then its the master cylinder.
good luck
Gary

I always understood it as when the slave goes there is no pressure to return the pedal, loss of fluid.
The pedal returning has to be the failure of some fingers?
It was starting to get dark when I got home and did not want the wife to see me playing with car again. ( Iknow but she is the boss). I will check tonight when I get in where is the resevoir for the clutch, I feel bad asking as I feel I should know!!
Cheers

PS. I do check the oil, power steering fuild, brake and water before every run
