This has been discussed to death, over the years in just about every classic car circle. There is no way that enough lead would be absorbed by 'washing' lumps of lead to have any disernable anti-knock effect. I strongly expect that most cars that are still running without valve recession with this little device, is almost certainly as a result of lead memory, i.e. the resisual desposits of years of using leaded fuel protecting the valves and valve seats.
