gearbox earth strap
Discussion
Thanks Froggie, that explains a lot. That eath is now eliminated from my ongoing investigations few earths are left to find. Tried to find the '2 behind rear seats' that Steve Heath described previously. Removed centre rear helmet storage thing and replaced it with my head - looked left then right but no sign. Then checked underneath the car in case behind meant outside and behind but nothing. Any ideas?
Thanks for looking froggie. My trouble is starting from cold which an autotune bloke said it was a weak coil trigger signal leading to a poor spark (he tested front 2 offside plugs). Voltage on HT was 5000v and should be nearer 50000v he recks. He checked coil supply + (positive) and seems ok.
Starts fine once hot.
Start fine from cold if i boost power from another battery.
Runs fine once started.
It is a new Battery which is confirmed as fine by Halford. Bought an accumate but still no success.
Also tested temp sensors (air and water), checked ignition box in boot for dry joints, seem OK. Also checked 100a fuse only to find 2 leads joined together - no fuse...
Earths located so far as follows:
Behind NSF wheel, behind rad on offside, one in the boot,Strap from Engine to chassis.
Even if i find ones behind daah and seats not sure they would draw that much power away from the plugs?
Only had car 3 months and still v. enthusiastic but carrying an extra battery and hooking it up whenever i start up is wearing thin!!

try removing the coolant expantion tank and see if there is a baynet type connection underneath, where the engine/ecu harness goes through the bulkhead,
have you tried hooking the car to a lap top programe? search forum ,this should help eliminate sensors,
not sure where the coil signal _ve comes from but it sounds like the only common thing to boath coils,
not sure if theise things have a ballast resistor ,wich may help on cranking power, usualy a car fires as the engine is still turning but power to starter is just stopped if one fails.
ANY ONE POSTED A WIRING DIAGRAME YET?

thanks for that,
got hold of a cd and hooked up to pc (thanks to lundy154). I think all was ok although all the diagnostics are not that straightforward to a beginner.
For example:
*Battery started off at about 10v although settled around the acceptable level of 13.
*Lambda sensors are allowed to fluctuate between 0 and 1.5 but would you expect to see an erratic fluctuation every second showing as spikes on the graph or should it be a more gentle movement between the values.
*Ignition ok at steady 16 unless i throttle it then dropped dramatically.
thanks for any observations.
