How often do they need to be done?
They are part of the valve train that makes a loud tapping noise when they are out of adjustment or when something within the valve train is broken. They should be checked as part of the regular service schedule, it is not something you would do yourself.

Adjustment is every 12k, although sooner if needed. In the case of the Cerb a bucket and shim (and spring) is directly in line with the valve, with cam over the top of the bucket. Shims are changed to keep the clearance between the bucket and the cam between the limits specified for the engine. A small clearance is needed so the cam doesn't hold the valve open.

I've just been told the clearances are 8-10 thou inlet and 10-12 exhaust
