fuel consumption

My 4.2 seems not too bad on fuel consumption on a long journey but when starting and stopping it often i am sure i can physically see that the fuel gauge needle has moved a fair distance on every new restart of the engine. its like it is using a gallon of petrol just to start the blinking thing. i am considering leaving it running in the office car park whilst i do a days work in the vain attempt to save some fuel. I appreciate the fact that cars use a fair bit of fuel on start up but this seems excessive. anyone else have this problem?
A mate of mine came with me to the Ace Cafe last week. When I pointed out how much fuel I'd used on the journey there, he said "The way the needle was moving, I thought that was the Rev counter!!" 
Its only money, and a lot of the Tesco 99 i put in gets burnt after it leaves the exhaust too

I have a 2003 4.5. Around town I get 140 miles to a full tank of gas, that's 140 miles for about 14 gallons (10mpg). On a good run, mainly motorway, I get 320-340 mile to a tank (3000rpm in 5th 90mph), about 24mpg. The least I've ever got from a full tank is 108miles but that was in Germany, say no more.

Middle teens normally but once, whilst calming the Mrs' enraged spirit 
, I actually achieved 39 mpg 
.... but, then again, I was on the back of a Tow Truck
My boot seems to permanently smell of petrol which would confirm "The more you use it, The More you Save" theory - perhaps we ahould just register it as a new cocktail called the 'Molotiv' !
