Ok peeps
looking for some direction here. Changing the porker in the summer and my current shortlist is a cerbera or a lotus elise. Budget up to 20k. Cerbera does seem to have the power and asthetic looks but does seem very fragile. Any advice, tips ,concerns, warnings, muted insults or just plain good advice will be warmly recieved!!!

Haven't found it to be fragile if correctly (over)maintained. It's quirky though: if you don't like surprises, you won't like the Cerb. For me, nothing beats the sheer grunt of the thing, combined with quite good & relatively docile handling.
Which porker?
You cannot compare an Elise and a Cerb', they are different animals on just about every level.
I've owned both, and the Elise is a hoot, and, if you're being good, you can get 45mph! That's something that'll never happen in a Cerb'.
The Elise leaks like a seive and you have to be a contortionist to get in and out with any style, the Cerb' is an animal, and every journey is an adventure, in one way or another.
I hope to buy another Elise soon, but I won't be selling the Cerbera to do so.
Best advise is try both for an extended test drive, it's the only way you'll really know which one you want.

993 last year (gone now) and picked up a mint 944 turbo for le man this year.
I am well awre that i'm comparing chalk and cheese here and they are quite different and when i ask this on the lotus section they'll be a different direction to the replys. I like the cerbie a lot i'm just concerned it may be too much of a hybrid? Some of the stories on here are horrific "bought it saturday....6K engine repair on monday"....i mean some of that makes porsche ownership look positively value for money!
Porsche ownership is value for money...
Having driven several of the Elise (+ Derivatives) and new Exige over the last few years this is my comparison.
The Elise/Exige models drive in a very similar way to standard performance road cars, you'll notice very quickly the production car roots of the engine and the way they drive.. Flat out up-changes produce no drama and anything over 120 on a standard model becomes tiresome as the engine runs out of puff...They are very forgiving of the driver and take massive talent to hustle to give the last 10% of performance, which in itself would be decimated by even your old Porsche with less talent requirement.
The Cerb on the other hand is exactly the opposite it's aggressive and doesn't treat it’s owners kindly. The handling of the Cerb (given a few mods) is comparable however it’ll pull like a train though to 180ish in stock form.
If you’re a tweaker, you’ll end up spending k’s on getting the Elise to feel like a High Performance car…. The Cerb you’ll spend that keeping it on the road.

I'd buy a decent 16k Cerby and leave 4k for nasty suprises if there are any.
I've driven an Elise before and my over-riding memory was thinking, "I can't put up with this ever-day." At the time I was riding 30,000 miles per year on a Honda Blackbird so it's not as if I'm used to warm cossetting luxury.
The Elise was like driving in a tin can. Harsh ride, harsh engine noise. Purely from a comfort point of view (i don't know how far up your list that is) the Elise is hard work. As for the Cerby, a mate of mine got into the passenger seat the other day and said, "These are the only seats I reckon I could fall asleep in." He's one of those guys that slates anything he doesn't have but he has shown remarkeable restraint with regard to the Cerby. He must be getting old! They are very comfy though.

I really would go for the Cerbera any day. Agreed, i comparing an elise and a Cerb is like comparing chalk and cheese, but for me, a fast car has to have the oomph under the bonnet when you need it. The Cerb is much better looking too, and as said before, if looked after properly, isn't that unreliable
